A case of moral policing has come to light from Indirapuram in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, after a video showing the assault of a youth identified as Shivam went viral on social media.

According to reports, Shivam was at a park near Gaur Green Society with a Muslim woman who was wearing a hijab when four men confronted them.

The men allegedly surrounded Shivam and assaulted him while abusing him. The woman was also allegedly subjected to abusive remarks and intimidation during the incident.

A 53-second video of the confrontation was subsequently circulated on social media. The footage has prompted the Uttar Pradesh Police to take cognisance of the matter.

Men question Shivam over being with Muslim woman

In the video, the attackers can be heard identifying the woman as Muslim and Shivam by name before questioning him about why he was accompanying her.

The men ask Shivam why he was “roaming” with the woman and make remarks about Hindu women. They also allegedly abuse him while repeatedly questioning his association with the Muslim woman.

The video appears to show several men surrounding Shivam while he is being assaulted.

The incident has raised concerns about individuals taking the law into their own hands and attempting to dictate whom adults can associate with based on their religion.

Woman threatened and questioned

The group also turns towards the woman in the video and questions her about her identity and her presence with Shivam.

She appears visibly frightened during the confrontation and tells the men that she will not repeat the act.

One of the men is allegedly heard asking her why she was with Shivam and making a remark questioning whether Muslim men were no longer available to her.

The men also allegedly tell her to marry within her community and question her decision to wear a hijab while meeting Shivam.

The footage has drawn attention to the harassment of the woman alongside the assault of Shivam.

Police trace car seen in video

According to media reports, the incident took place near a park in the vicinity of Gaur Green Society in Indirapuram.

Police are examining the video to identify the men involved in the assault and threats. Investigators are also examining the registration number of a silver-coloured car visible in the footage.

Indirapuram ACP Suryabali Maurya confirmed that the viral video is from a park in the Indirapuram area and said police were investigating the matter.

The police are using the available video evidence and the vehicle’s registration details to establish the identities of those involved.

Viral video prompts UP Police action

The video reportedly came to the attention of the Uttar Pradesh Police on August 25, following which police began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The identities of the attackers and the exact circumstances leading to the confrontation are still being established.

The incident has also brought the issue of moral policing into focus, particularly where individuals attempt to control or intimidate adults over their friendships or relationships based on religious identity.

Further action will depend on the findings of the police investigation and identification of those seen in the video.
