New Delhi: Indian expatriates in Qatar now have a new digital channel to send money directly to UPI-enabled bank accounts in India, with Qatar Post launching a UPI-powered postal remittance service aimed at making cross-border transfers faster, simpler and more accessible.

The service, called PosTransfer powered by UPI, became available in Qatar on August 15, 2026, coinciding with India’s Independence Day. It has been developed through a collaboration involving Qatar Post, India Post, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Interconnection Platform (UPU-IP), and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL).

The initiative combines the extensive reach of postal networks with India’s digital public infrastructure, creating a new mechanism for international remittances, particularly for the large Indian community in Qatar. On the occasion of the launch, Sandeep Kumar, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of India in Qatar, visited the Qatar Post outlet at LuLu Mall in Doha and interacted with stakeholders associated with the initiative.

How PosTransfer works

Under the new arrangement, customers in Qatar can initiate a remittance by visiting a participating Qatar Post outlet. They are required to provide the beneficiary’s verified UPI ID in India, along with the necessary customer identification details, and complete the transaction at the counter.

For the recipient in India to receive the money, the facility for receiving foreign inward remittances through the UPI application being used must first be activated. Once the facility has been activated and the transaction completed, the money is credited directly to the beneficiary’s UPI-enabled bank account.

Transfers are designed to be completed within minutes, meaning recipients do not have to visit a post office, bank branch or other physical location to collect the funds. The money reaches the eligible UPI-linked bank account directly.

The service is available for transactions ranging from QAR 10 to QAR 4,000, subject to a maximum equivalent of Rs 1 lakh per transaction. Qatar Post currently charges a flat service fee of QAR 15 per transaction. The postal operator has also indicated that it is offering competitive exchange rates based on prevailing market conditions and may introduce promotional offers in the future.

PosTransfer is particularly relevant for small and frequent remittances, including transfers made regularly by workers supporting families and beneficiaries in India.

The service should not, however, be confused with using UPI for merchant payments overseas. In this case, customers do not use a UPI application or scan a QR code in Qatar. Instead, the transaction begins at a Qatar Post outlet, while UPI serves as the underlying digital infrastructure through which the funds are transferred to the recipient’s bank account in India.

Linking postal networks with India’s digital infrastructure

The launch represents another step in the international expansion of India’s digital payments ecosystem and demonstrates how traditional postal infrastructure can be integrated with modern digital financial systems.
Qatar has a large Indian expatriate population, with more than 800,000 Indians residing in the country.

Remittances constitute an important financial connection between Qatar and India, as Indian workers regularly transfer money to support families and beneficiaries back home. PosTransfer adds another option to existing channels such as banks, exchange houses and digital remittance platforms.

Qatar Post currently operates 18 branches across the country, including outlets serving industrial and residential areas. The organisation has indicated plans to expand its reach closer to communities, particularly locations with high concentrations of workers. This postal network provides a physical access point for customers while the recipient-side transaction is handled through India’s digital payment infrastructure.
India Post’s participation is also significant because of its extensive nationwide network, which reaches smaller towns and rural areas. The partnership therefore brings together the physical accessibility of postal systems in Qatar and India with the speed and interoperability of UPI.

For Indian families receiving money, the arrangement removes the need for physical collection and allows eligible funds to be deposited directly into bank accounts. The integration is also intended to support greater financial inclusion and seamless digital financial connectivity between the two countries.

At a broader level, the Qatar-India corridor illustrates how postal networks and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) can work together to modernise international postal financial services. The collaboration between the UPU Interconnection Platform and UPI demonstrates the potential for interoperable cross-border financial services that combine established postal networks with digital payment systems.

PosTransfer corridors to expand to other countries

PosTransfer powered by UPI is an international inward remittance service created by integrating the UPU-IP with India’s UPI ecosystem. It enables participating postal operators to offer customers a relatively simple and secure mechanism for sending money to UPI-enabled bank accounts in India.

The Qatar launch is therefore not being positioned as an isolated bilateral initiative. India Post is also working with postal operators in other countries to operationalise additional PosTransfer powered by UPI corridors, potentially expanding the model to other international remittance routes.

The initiative comes as cross-border remittances increasingly move towards digital channels. For Qatar-based Indian expatriates, PosTransfer provides an additional route that combines a familiar postal counter with direct digital credit into an eligible Indian bank account.

The service consequently brings together three important elements that Qatar’s postal network, India’s globally expanding UPI infrastructure and the UPU’s international postal connectivity platform. By connecting these systems, the Qatar-India corridor seeks to make remittances more accessible, efficient and convenient while strengthening digital financial links between the two countries.

For India, the initiative also extends the role of UPI beyond domestic payments and into international financial services. For migrant workers and their families, its immediate significance lies in the ability to initiate transfers at Qatar Post outlets and have the money deposited directly into eligible UPI-linked bank accounts in India, without requiring recipients to travel to collect the funds.

With further PosTransfer corridors being developed with postal operators in other countries, the Qatar launch could mark an important stage in the wider internationalisation of India’s digital public infrastructure and the modernisation of postal-based cross-border remittance services.
