Jagdalpur: The three-day Bastar Tiranga Yatra 2026 began in Narayanpur on August 12 with a grand patriotic ceremony, drawing thousands of school students, local residents, bikers, women riders and public representatives.

The yatra aims to showcase the changing security landscape of Bastar and send a message that the tribal region of Chhattisgarh is emerging from decades of Maoist violence. It will traverse several former Maoist strongholds and areas that witnessed some of the fiercest encounters between security forces and insurgents.

The yatra began from Narayanpur, once regarded as a major stronghold of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), and is scheduled to culminate at Karregutta Hills in Bijapur district. Karregutta, considered one of the Maoists’ strongest remaining bases, was brought under security forces’ control in January this year.

Grand Launch in Narayanpur

The procession was flagged off from the Narayanpur High School Ground following a cultural programme featuring patriotic performances by schoolchildren and local artists.

Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma, along with Forest Minister and Narayanpur MLA Kedar Kashyap, led the motorcycle rally. A large number of bikers, including women riders, joined the leaders as the yatra set out through the region. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from local communities, with the Tricolour being carried along the route as participants raised patriotic slogans.

Through Former Red Corridors

The yatra is scheduled to pass through several areas of Dantewada, Sukma and Bijapur that were once considered highly sensitive Maoist zones. The route includes Burkapal, Minpa-Tadmetla, Jagargunda, Silger and Tekalgudem, before the procession reaches Karregutta Hills in Bijapur.

Many of these areas have been associated with deadly encounters and attacks involving Maoists and security forces over the years. The decision to take the Tiranga Yatra through these former ‘red corridors’ is intended to underline the changing ground situation in Bastar and the return of civilian activity to areas once dominated by violence and fear.

The three-day journey is being projected not merely as a patriotic motorcycle rally but as a symbolic march through Bastar’s changing landscape, carrying a message of peace, development, national unity and renewed public confidence.

Tribute to Martyrs at Halami Munjmeta

As the yatra  moved from Narayanpur towards Halami Munjmeta, participants raised patriotic slogans and paid tribute to security personnel who lost their lives in Maoist violence. At Halami Munjmeta, homage was paid to Baliram Potai, Santosh Shrimali, Somaru Ram Vatti and Abdul Wahid Khan, who were killed in a Maoist attack.

The tribute programme was accompanied by the ‘Ek Ped Shaheedon Ke Naam’ (One Tree in the Name of Martyrs) initiative, under which participants planted trees in memory of the fallen personnel. The organisers said the initiative seeks to combine remembrance of the martyrs with environmental conservation while passing the message of patriotism to the younger generation.

The village sarpanch also handed over sacred soil from the village in memory of the martyrs. The soil will be preserved as part of a collection intended for a proposed martyr museum, where it will serve as a permanent reminder of the sacrifices made in the region.

Thousands Join Patriotic Procession

The opening ceremony witnessed the participation of thousands of school students and local residents, many of whom carried the Tricolour during the procession. Before the yatra began, the High School Ground hosted a cultural programme featuring patriotic performances by schoolchildren and artists. Sportspersons who have represented the region at the national level also showcased their talents, drawing enthusiastic applause from the gathering.

A large number of motorcycle riders, including women bikers, joined the procession. The participation of youth and women added to the public character of the event and underscored the organisers’ emphasis on community participation. The yatra is also expected to involve local youth, voluntary organisations, women’s groups, NCC and NSS volunteers, Nehru Yuva Kendra representatives, Scouts and Guides, and elected representatives at different stages.

‘Tricolour Now Flies Where Black Flags Once Did’

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma highlighted what he described as the changing atmosphere in Bastar. Sharma said areas where people were once  forced to display black flags and black umbrellas under Maoist diktats were now witnessing the national flag being flown with pride and dignity.

He said the increasing presence of government and administrative officials in rural areas after the decline of Maoist influence had helped restore confidence among villagers. According to Sharma, some villagers have expressed the feeling that they are experiencing freedom in a new way.

Sharma described the Tiranga Yatra as more than a motorcycle rally or a symbolic display of the national flag.
“This journey is not merely an event to carry the Tricolour. It is an effort to take the message of peace, trust and nationalism to areas that remained under the influence of Maoist violence for a long time,” Sharma said.
He added that the yatra would pass through former Maoist-affected areas without fear and convey a message of peace and confidence.

Focus on Freedom, Constitution and Public Participation

During his address, Sharma also said that the end of Maoist influence had created greater opportunities for villagers to participate freely in social and cultural activities. He said people would now be able to welcome guests without restrictions, organise traditional fairs and festivals, and move freely without fear.

Referring to the Constitution drafted under the leadership of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, Sharma said its strength lay in its ability to provide equal opportunities and take every section of society forward. He also appealed to people to celebrate Independence Day by displaying the Tricolour at their homes. He said participation in the motorcycle rally was not the only way to celebrate Independence Day and urged citizens to follow the Prime Minister’s call to ensure the Tricolour is displayed in homes.

According to Sharma, the objective of the yatra is to take the national flag to areas where people had once found it difficult to travel because of fear of Maoist violence.

Soil from Martyrdom Sites to Be Preserved

One of the most significant elements of the yatra is the collection of soil from places associated with the martyrdom of security personnel. The soil collected during the journey will be preserved and used as part of a memorial initiative dedicated to the martyrs. The organisers said the initiative would ensure that future generations remain connected with the history and sacrifices of security personnel who lost their lives while protecting the country.

The yatra will also include tributes at martyrdom sites, tree plantations and interactions with young people.
Forest Minister and Narayanpur MLA Kedar Kashyap thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for their support.

— Kedar Kashyap (@KedarKashyapBJP) August 12, 2026

Kashyap said the yatra would travel from Narayanpur through Dantewada and Sukma and other areas affected by Maoist violence. He said soil would be collected from locations where security personnel had sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. The soil, he added, would contribute to the creation of a memorial to honour the martyrs and introduce future generations to their courage and sacrifice.

A Symbol of Bastar’s Changing Landscape

The launch of the Bastar Tiranga Yatra presented a picture of a changing Bastar, with the Tricolour being carried along roads that were once associated with violence and fear. The organisers said the yatra seeks to turn these routes into symbols of peace, confidence, national integration and development. By combining patriotic celebrations with tributes to martyrs, environmental initiatives and community participation, the event aims to create a deeper connection between the region’s past and its emerging future.

As the Tiranga Yatra moves from Narayanpur through Dantewada, Sukma and Bijapur towards Kareguttalu, its central message remains focused on peace, patriotism, public confidence and development.
