New Delhi: Families of Delhi Police personnel injured during the CJP protest have come forward to recount what they described as a deeply traumatic experience for officers deployed on duty during the violence. Speaking at a press briefing on July 31, relatives of the injured personnel alleged that what began as a protest escalated into a situation in which police officers faced serious threats to their safety.

One of the most emotional accounts came from the daughter of a Delhi Police Sub-Inspector, who said her father was “almost lynched” after being pulled into a mob near the protest stage at Jantar Mantar.

The police officer, she said, had earlier served for 15 years in the Indian Navy, including as a Marine Commando, before joining the Delhi Police. According to his daughter, he was deployed near the barricades at the main protest site, where a large crowd had gathered.

“My father was present at the main protest site. He was on the front line near the barricades, where there was a large crowd,” she said while describing the circumstances surrounding his deployment.

The officer’s daughter said that her father had repeatedly expressed concern to his family about the changing nature of the demonstration.

According to her, after returning home from duty, he would tell the family that the protest no longer appeared to be limited to students and that people he described as “anti-social elements” had become involved. She recalled that her father had been working at the frontline when the situation turned violent. She alleged that he was later surrounded and pulled by a mob near the stage at Jantar Mantar and narrowly escaped being lynched. The incident, she said, left the family shaken. The daughter said her father sustained serious injuries during the incident and was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for treatment.

According to her account, the officer remained unconscious at the hospital for around four hours. His colleagues later brought him home at around 10 pm, where his family saw the extent of his injuries.

“His uniform was completely stained with blood. It was extremely painful for us to see him in that condition,” she said. For the family, the emotional distress did not end with his return home. She said she was particularly hurt after seeing social media posts allegedly describing her injured father as a criminal, despite his deployment as a police officer during the protest.

The officer’s daughter said that after seeing the social media criticism, she decided that the families of injured police personnel should also have an opportunity to present their side. She alleged that people accused of attacking her father were subsequently approaching the Supreme Court and filing complaints against police personnel.

“I felt very hurt and decided that I should also seek justice for my father,” she said. She added that she received support from other families of injured Delhi Police personnel and eventually approached the Supreme Court along with them.

According to her, the families sought legal representation to ensure that their concerns were also heard. She said an advocate assured them that they were citizens with equal rights and that their grievances could also be placed before the court.

“No one talking about those police officers who got injured during CJP protest, we have filed a plea in court.

The son of an injured Delhi Police ACP, Lakshya, said families of injured cops have filed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking justice. He said social media links shared by his friends often portrayed the police in a negative light. Lakshya recalled his father advising him not to pay attention to what he described as one-sided media coverage.

ACP’s wife recalls traumatic return home

Another account came from the wife of a Delhi Police ACP who was also injured during the clashes. Speaking at the press briefing, she described her husband’s return home as an extremely painful experience for both her and their two-year-old daughter. She said the family was deeply distressed to see him return late at night after sustaining injuries while performing his duty.

“The moment he returned home late on the night of July 20, injured as he was, was incredibly painful and traumatic for both me and my two-year-old daughter,” she said. She appeared alongside other family members of Delhi Police personnel who had gathered to share their experiences and highlight the difficulties faced by their families following the violence.

Families condemn violence, call for accountability

The families said their primary concern was the safety and dignity of police personnel deployed to maintain law and order. One family member alleged that individuals who attempted to disrupt the students’ protest, damage its image and undermine the dignity of Parliament should be held accountable.

At the same time, the family member maintained that students should not be treated alike and called for their release after proper verification of their records. The remarks reflected the families’ distinction between students participating in a demonstration and those whom they alleged were responsible for violence during the protest.

Police families question attacks on personnel on duty

The relatives of the injured officers said police personnel were performing their assigned responsibilities when the situation deteriorated. They questioned why officers deployed to maintain security and manage crowds became targets during the confrontation.

For the families, the violence was not merely a clash at a protest site but an incident that had consequences inside their homes. Injured officers had to return to their families after facing physical attacks, while spouses, children and parents were left dealing with the fear and uncertainty surrounding their condition.

The daughter of the injured Sub-Inspector said the sight of her father returning home with a blood-stained uniform remains particularly painful for the family. His previous service in the Indian Navy, including his experience as a Marine Commando, was also highlighted as part of the family’s account of his commitment to public service.

The press briefing by the police families came amid a wider debate over the events surrounding the CJP protest and the conduct of protesters and police personnel. While questions surrounding the protest and the actions of those involved continue to be discussed, the families of injured officers sought to draw attention to what they described as the human cost faced by security personnel on the ground.

They argued that police officers should not automatically be portrayed as wrongdoers when they are injured while carrying out their duties. At the same time, they stressed that accountability should apply to anyone found responsible for violence, irrespective of whether they were associated with the protest.

The families also appealed for the experiences of injured personnel to be considered alongside the concerns raised by protesters. For them, the central issue is the safety of those tasked with maintaining order during demonstrations. They said disagreements over a protest should not translate into attacks on police personnel or place their families in a position where they fear whether their loved ones will return home safely.

The accounts shared at today’s briefing therefore offered a personal perspective on the violence, shifting attention from the broader political and legal debate to the families waiting for police personnel to return from duty. Their message was clear: while peaceful protest and the rights of citizens must be respected, those responsible for violence against personnel performing their duties must also be held accountable after due process.
