The demolition of Hyderabad’s iconic Taj Banjara hotel has begun, marking the end of one of the city’s most celebrated hospitality landmarks. After nearly four decades of operations under the Taj brand, the lakeside property is set to make way for a new 40-storey development.
Demolition work has commenced at the Taj Banjara property in Banjara Hills, with workers first removing reusable materials such as doors, windows, electrical wiring, wooden fittings, iron fixtures, and other salvageable components before the main structure is brought down.
According to reports, the demolition is expected to take around four months, after which the landmark hotel will be completely cleared. The site will then pave the way for a 40-storey redevelopment project.
GHMC Had Sealed the Property
The hotel had already faced regulatory action before its demolition. In 2025, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) sealed the property over pending property tax dues of approximately Rs 1.43 crore, which had accumulated over two years. The sealing drew attention to the fate of one of Hyderabad’s best-known luxury hotels, which had already ceased operations.
A Landmark That Served Hyderabad for Decades
Spread across 3.4 acres overlooking the picturesque Banjara Lake, Taj Banjara was among Hyderabad’s most recognisable five-star hotels. Its lakeside location, elegant architecture, landscaped gardens, and premium hospitality made it a preferred destination for business travellers, tourists, diplomats, celebrities, and local residents alike.
The property hosted countless weddings, corporate events, diplomatic meetings, cultural programmes, and family celebrations, becoming an integral part of Hyderabad’s social and hospitality landscape.
The hotel has a rich history dating back to the 1980s. The property was initially managed by the ITC Group until 1986, after which it was transferred to Taj GVK Hotels, which operated the hotel for nearly 40 years. Under the Taj brand, the hotel became synonymous with luxury hospitality in Hyderabad and earned a reputation for its warm service, fine dining, and serene ambience overlooking the lake.
Taj Banjara officially stopped operations in 2023, bringing an end to nearly four decades of hospitality. The closure followed the expiry of operational arrangements, after which the property remained vacant before demolition activities began. Its shutdown marked the conclusion of an important chapter in Hyderabad’s hospitality industry.
For many Hyderabad residents, Taj Banjara was far more than a luxury hotel. It was a venue where families celebrated weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and milestone events. Business leaders attended conferences, government officials hosted meetings, and tourists experienced Hyderabad’s renowned hospitality.
