Hundreds of workers led by Hindu Munnani state president Kadeswara Subramaniam held a protest on July 12 at Thiruvattar in Kanyakumari district, demanding that the authorities remove the illegal prayer hall as ordered by the court and condemning officials who are working in support of missionaries.

Hindu Munnani and BJP members staged a major protest on the Thiruvattar-Marthandam road in Kanyakumari district, demanding the immediate closure of an illegal Christian prayer hall. Protesters alleged that the structure near the Mathur Hanging Bridge was built illegally and operates in violation of a Madurai High Court order.
According to Kadeswara C Subramaniam, the police refused to remove the prayer hall despite their repeated demands. To protest against their supportive action towards them, Hindu Munnani gave a call for a protest, which was held at Thiruvattar Junction, demanding the removal of the illegal prayer hall near Mathur Thotti Palam in Kanyakumari district.

Hindu Munnani state vice-president Arasu Raja, joint convenor Ponnaiah, state secretary K Kutralanathan, state executive member Sakthivelan, Nellai zonal head Thanga Manohar, secretary Kannan, Brahmanayagam and district president Arumugam took part in the protest. Hindus and members of the public joined the protest to show their opposition and condemn the authorities for their support to Christians.
At the meeting, advocate Kutralanathan faulted the TN Education Minister for his remarks in Karur in front of CM Joseph Vijay. The minister had chanted “Assalamualaikum” and “Praise the Lord”, but he did not say “Muruganukku Arohara” (in praise of Bhagawan Murugan). “It is the attitude of the TVK government. They are afraid of chanting Hindu god names. The Vijay government has moved the Supreme Court in the Thiruparankundram Deepam issue and challenged the High Court order on cow slaughter in public places following pressure from Muslims and has decided to give temple lands. It is no different from the earlier DMK government in following an anti-Hindu stand. It is also trying to increase the 3.5 per cent quota for Muslims to 5 per cent in education and jobs,” he said.
He said, “During the previous DMK government, 175 temples allegedly located on government land were demolished on the grounds of encroachment, while no similar action had been taken against allegedly illegal churches or mosques.”
He further alleged that the present TVK government has continued the same approach.
The protesters blocked the road in protest against administrative and police inaction, demanding that the facility be permanently sealed and demolished within 10 days.
Background
According to Hindu Munnani, “Locals first complained to the police in 2020, alleging that a church was being constructed in the locality, and during the inquiry, the owners said that the building was not a church but was intended to function as a guest house and residence for a pastor.
Subramaniam said that while approval was sought from the local panchayat by submitting a building plan, the structure ultimately constructed differed substantially from the approved plan. It claimed that even local body officials had acknowledged that the completed building did not match the sanctioned blueprint.”
Despite multiple inquiries conducted between 2020 and 2022, Hindu Munnani claimed that the building subsequently began functioning as a church. Hindus approached the court seeking legal action against the alleged unauthorised religious structure. The court ordered that the building be removed. However, neither the police nor the Revenue Department implemented the order.
Hindu Munnani said that those who staged protests demanding the implementation of the court’s direction were arrested, while no action was taken against the people running alleged illegal church.
Hindu Munnani speakers recalled what they described as the pro-Christian stance of the TVK government, citing Minister Vanni Arasu and Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar attending Christian gatherings and making remarks encouraging Christian organisations to organise larger protests, as well as the Speaker quoting verses from the Bible in the State Legislature.
It further claimed that these actions reflected the government’s alleged pro-Christian stance and influenced officials to act in favour of Christian institutions.
