Bengaluru: Veteran multilingual actor Prakash Raj has found himself at the centre of a legal controversy after a Bengaluru court reportedly issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against him in connection with allegations that he possesses voter identity cards in multiple states.

The development stems from a private complaint filed by an individual identified as Dileep Kumar, who has alleged that Prakash Raj obtained voter identity cards in four different states, raising questions about compliance with electoral regulations. The case is currently being heard before the 48th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Court in Bengaluru.

According to the complaint, the actor is alleged to have voter registrations in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Election laws in India stipulate that a citizen can be enrolled as a voter in only one constituency at a time and should possess only one valid voter registration. The complainant has argued that the alleged existence of multiple voter registrations amounts to a violation of election rules.

Court records cited in reports indicate that summons were issued to the actor on multiple occasions. It is further reported that Prakash Raj did not appear before the court despite being served notices. Following his alleged non-appearance, the court reportedly issued non-bailable warrants on two previous occasions. As he allegedly failed to respond to those directions as well, the magistrate court is said to have issued a fresh non-bailable warrant to secure his presence before the court.

The case has attracted significant attention due to Prakash Raj’s stature as a prominent actor and public commentator. Known for his outspoken views on social and political issues, the actor has often been at the centre of public debates and controversies.

The allegations regarding multiple voter identity cards have also sparked discussions on electoral transparency and the importance of maintaining accurate voter rolls. Election experts note that duplicate voter registrations can occur for various reasons, including migration between states, administrative errors or delays in updating electoral records. However, whether any violation has occurred in this particular case remains a matter for judicial determination.

Legal experts point out that the issuance of a non-bailable warrant does not amount to a finding of guilt. Rather, it is a procedural step that may be taken by a court when an accused person repeatedly fails to appear despite summons or previous warrants. The allegations themselves remain subject to examination, and the court will ultimately determine the facts based on evidence presented during the proceedings.

Meanwhile, Prakash Raj has strongly denied reports suggesting that he is facing an arrest warrant. Responding through social media, the actor dismissed the reports as false and accused certain sections of the media of spreading misinformation.

Sharing screenshots of news reports claiming that a warrant had been issued against him, Prakash Raj wrote that some individuals were engaged in creating and circulating false stories. In a strongly worded post, he stated that those spreading such reports were attempting to manufacture fake news and sensationalise the issue.

The issue has also triggered   reactions. Noted Commentator and Hindu activist Chakravarthy Sulibele took a dig at the actor on social media, referring to the allegations of voter registrations in multiple states. His remarks quickly gained traction online and added another layer to the ongoing public debate surrounding the case.

Despite the intense discussion on social media and in political circles, legal observers caution that the matter remains sub judice. The allegations against Prakash Raj have not been proven in court, and no judicial finding has yet been made regarding the validity of the claims.

With the case now drawing widespread attention, all eyes are on the next hearing before the Bengaluru court. The proceedings are expected to focus on the allegations raised in the complaint, the actor’s response, and the authenticity of the electoral records in question.
