Imphal: Security forces have intensified combat operations against militant groups in trouble-hit Manipur. After the brutal killings of 6 Naga civilians by Kuki militant group, the security agencies are conducting massive search and cordon operations across the hill districts and areas near the India-Myanmar border. Manipur police said that heavy gunfight took place between security forces and militant groups in Molphei and Songkong villages on June 16.
“Information was received today from the Assam Rifles that an encounter took place on 16 June 2026 between Molphei and Songkong villages involving a joint column of the Assam Rifles and the Army against suspected militants.”, a statement by Manipur police said. During the encounter, one suspected militant was killed. One AK-47 rifle, along with magazines, ammunition, explosives, and other incriminating items, was recovered from the spot. A case has been registered in this connection, and further investigation is in progress, police said.
COBRA Battalion in action
The Cobra Battalion of CRPF deployed in Manipur by the central government is seen in full action in the state. As per Manipur police, on 17th June, security forces led by COBRA Battalion received intelligence input about the hideout of militants and accordingly conducted a massive search and cordon operation. During intensive search operations at multiple locations (Leilon Vaiphei, Leilon Khunou, L. Munlui and Konsakhul villages) within the jurisdiction of Leimakhong police station in Kangpokpi district massive amounts of arms and ammunition were recovered. Security forces seized eleven 12 bore rifles, 294 live rounds ammunition of 12 bore gun, 2 packages of gun powder, 34 empty cases of 12 bore ammunition, and

Moreover, thirty bunkers, outposts and strategic camp sites found in the vicinity of these villages were dismantled. Alongside, four individuals were also detained during the operation for further verification.
It should be mentioned that on June 13th, Manipur Director General of Police Mukesh Singh said that security forces have successfully recovered over 70% of looted weapons. DGP Singh further said that alongside the weapons, the misinformation spreading through social media has caused a serious concern in the already troubled state. “Monitoring cells are actively tracking and acting against false content that could trigger inter-community tensions’, he said.
