A local dispute in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district has snowballed into a major controversy involving allegations of religious conversion, political mobilisation and growing tensions within tribal communities.
At the centre of the controversy is Mukesh Azad, the district president of the Bhim Army in Sehore, who has been accused by local residents and activists of attempting to convert members of the Barela tribal community to Christianity through meetings allegedly held in remote villages of the district.
The allegations emerged after a confrontation in Bania village, located in the Rehti region of Sehore district, where local residents claim they found Azad and his associates conducting a late-night gathering linked to missionary activities.
What happened in Bania village?
According to local residents, suspicion had been growing for some time regarding religious activities being carried out in tribal-dominated villages. Villagers allege that late-night meetings were being organised under the guise of social gatherings and prayers.
