A local dispute in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district has snowballed into a major controversy involving allegations of religious conversion, political mobilisation and growing tensions within tribal communities.
At the centre of the controversy is Mukesh Azad, the district president of the Bhim Army in Sehore, who has been accused by local residents and activists of attempting to convert members of the Barela tribal community to Christianity through meetings allegedly held in remote villages of the district.
The allegations emerged after a confrontation in Bania village, located in the Rehti region of Sehore district, where local residents claim they found Azad and his associates conducting a late-night gathering linked to missionary activities.
What happened in Bania village?
According to local residents, suspicion had been growing for some time regarding religious activities being carried out in tribal-dominated villages. Villagers allege that late-night meetings were being organised under the guise of social gatherings and prayers.
The situation reportedly came to a head when local activists and villagers reached Bania village and questioned those present about the purpose of the gathering.
This led to a confrontation between the two groups, which later escalated into a physical altercation.
Residents claim that members of Mukesh Azad’s group reacted aggressively when questioned about alleged conversion activities. Some locals have further alleged that sticks and other objects were used during the clash.
Barela tribal community voices concern
Members of the Barela tribal community have expressed concern over what they describe as increasing missionary influence in the region.
Several villagers alleged that efforts were being made to persuade tribal families to abandon their traditional beliefs and adopt Christianity. Locals also claimed that demographic changes and religious shifts have become noticeable in certain pockets of the district over the past few years.
Community members have warned that any attempt to induce or pressure tribals into changing their faith would be strongly opposed.
Many residents insist that the issue is not political but relates directly to the protection of tribal traditions and cultural identity.
Allegations of Church funding
Local activists involved in the dispute have alleged that missionary networks and church-linked funding are being used to support conversion activities in tribal areas.
They claim financial assistance, social support programmes and other inducements are being used to attract vulnerable families.
However, no official evidence regarding these allegations has yet been made public by investigating agencies, and the claims remain contested.
The controversy has nevertheless intensified calls from local groups for a thorough investigation into the source of funds and the activities of organisations working in the area.
Bhim Army rejects allegations
According to their version of events, Mukesh Azad was not involved in any conversion activity and was instead targeted in a pre-planned attack by political opponents.
Bhim Army members claim Azad and his associates were surrounded and assaulted by a group of local activists. Following the incident, party workers staged protests and demanded police protection for their members.
Supporters have accused rival groups of attempting to portray a local dispute as a conversion-related controversy for political purposes.
Competing narratives fuel controversy
The incident has now become the subject of competing narratives.
One side maintains that the confrontation was triggered by alleged religious conversion activities among tribal communities, while the other claims it was a politically motivated attack on a Bhim Army leader.
The clash has attracted attention across the district, with both sides seeking action from the administration.
Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely to prevent further escalation and maintain law and order.
Police officials have not publicly confirmed the conversion allegations and are expected to examine all aspects of the incident, including the circumstances leading to the confrontation and the claims made by both sides.
With tensions continuing in the area, the controversy has once again brought the issue of religious conversion in tribal regions of Madhya Pradesh into the spotlight, while questions surrounding the role of political organisations, missionary activities and local resistance continue to dominate public discussion.
