1. Married Hindu Woman Alleges Pressure for Religious Conversion To Islam in Surat
A married Hindu woman from the Brahmin community in Karjan village of Kamrej taluka, Surat district, became involved in a relationship with a Muslim man from the neighbouring village of Ghala. The woman, a mother of two children, was reportedly subjected to repeated pressure to convert to Islam during the course of the relationship.
According to the complaint filed at Kamrej police station by the woman’s husband, the accused established contact with her and gradually gained influence over her personal life. The complaint alleges that he repeatedly pressured her to change her religion and also issued threats to the woman’s husband.
The matter drew the attention of state authorities, and on 4 May 2026, a Gujarat government minister visited the family to review the situation. Concerns were raised regarding the seriousness of the allegations, including claims of possible organised involvement.
Following the complaint, directions were issued for a detailed inquiry. Surat district police initiated an investigation and stated that inquiries into the allegations, including the reported threats and other aspects of the case, were ongoing.
2. Altered Version of Bhagavad Gita with Christian References Circulated in Telangana
An incident involving the circulation of a modified version of the Bhagavad Gita surfaced in Telangana after videos of the interaction went viral on social media in May 2026. Christian missionaries were seen distributing copies of a book titled Thraitha Siddhanta Bhagavad Gita, which contained references to Jesus Christ within a text presented as the Bhagavad Gita.
During the interaction, a Hindu man was encouraged to read and accept the book. After examining portions of the text, he discovered references to Jesus and objected, questioning why Christian theological references had been inserted into a revered Hindu scripture. He also asked why the text did not instead contain references to Bhagwan Krishna or Bhagwan Ram and expressed anger over what he viewed as a distortion of the sacred text.
The videos sparked widespread discussion on social media, with several users alleging that the modified publication was an attempt to reinterpret Hindu scripture through a Christian framework and use it as a tool for religious outreach.
3. International Media Coverage of BJP Victories Sparks Debate Over Portrayal of Hindu Identity
Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victories in the West Bengal and Assam Assembly elections on 4 May 2026, several international media organisations, including The New York Times, Reuters, Al Jazeera, and The Guardian, published reports examining the electoral outcome and the party’s political rise.
The reports frequently referred to the BJP through terms such as “Hindu nationalists”, “Hindu first politics”, and “Hindu hardliners”, while discussing concerns related to minority rights, secularism, and the political implications of the election results. Coverage also linked the party’s electoral success to debates surrounding voter roll revisions in West Bengal and their impact on minority communities.
The New York Times described the BJP’s gains in West Bengal as a “conquest” by “Modi’s Hindu nationalists” and characterised its ideology as “expansionist Hindu first politics”. Several reports framed Hindu political mobilisation and electoral consolidation within broader discussions about majoritarianism, minority anxieties, and the future of secular governance in India.
The coverage drew criticism from sections of the Hindu community and BJP supporters, who argued that Hindu political expression and civilisational identity were being portrayed in a negative and prejudicial manner. Critics contended that the reporting associated Hindu identity and political participation with exclusionary or communal narratives while overlooking other political, social, and electoral factors.

A sacred Bhog room at the Sri Sri Radha Govinda Temple in Rampurhat, Birbhum district, West Bengal, was reclaimed on 4 May 2026 after reportedly being used as a Trinamool Congress (TMC) party office for several years.
The Bhog room, traditionally used for preparing prasad offered to the deity and distributed to devotees, had reportedly ceased functioning for its religious purpose during the period of occupation. Political banners, chairs, and other materials associated with party activities were installed within the temple premises.
Following the BJP’s electoral victory in West Bengal, BJP leaders and workers arrived at the temple and broke open the locks of the Bhog room. Videos circulated online showed them removing chairs, banners, and other political materials from the premises.

As the procession approached a mosque, some members of the Muslim community objected to the music and the route being taken. Police and district administration officials reached the spot soon after receiving information and initiated efforts to restore order. District Magistrate Saurabh Jorwal and Superintendent of Police Swaran Prabhat supervised the situation, and additional police personnel were deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.
According to the administration, meetings had been held before the event and certain conditions regarding the route and use of DJ music had been agreed upon to prevent tensions. The incident came to light after Rita Dutta, wife of a BJP worker associated with the party for nearly four decades, received a parcel at her residence shortly after Suvendu Adhikari had visited her home. Three young men reportedly delivered the package, claiming it had been sent by the TMC. Inside was a white saree bearing the message, “Suvendu only for two days, TMC for a lifetime.” The parcel also contained a symbol associated with Hindu death rituals and carried the word “Beware” written in red ink.

50. Hindu Woman Brutally Attacked and Looted in Noakhali Amid Rising Anti-Hindu Violence in Bangladesh
In Noakhali district of Bangladesh, a Hindu woman from Ward No. 7 of Charishwar Union under Hatia Upazila was subjected to a violent late-night attack after unidentified assailants forcibly entered her home around 3:25 am on 10 May 2026. The attackers assaulted her inside the house, inflicting severe physical torture. In the course of the attack, her ear was cut with a knife, and she was left critically traumatised. The intruders also looted valuables, including a gold pendant weighing around five annas and cash amounting to 10,000 taka, before fleeing the scene.
The sudden and brutal nature of the assault created panic in the locality. Residents expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security environment, especially for Hindu families living in the region. The victim’s condition and the level of violence involved prompted immediate demands from locals for a swift investigation and strict action against those responsible.
Soon after the incident became known, leaders of the Hatia Upazila Hindu Parishad visited the victim’s residence, met the family, and assured support. They strongly condemned the attack and urged the administration and law enforcement authorities to ensure the arrest and punishment of the perpetrators, while also calling for urgent steps to restore confidence among the local Hindu community.
Within this wider context, the Noakhali incident reflects a disturbing pattern where Hindu households remain vulnerable to violent crime, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where law enforcement response is often delayed. However, based on the currently available information, there are no confirmed indicators such as religious slurs, explicit statements of intent, forced conversion attempts, or direct references to the victims’ faith that would clearly establish a religious motive behind the attack.
At this stage, the incident appears to involve extreme violence accompanied by robbery and theft, suggesting a possible financial motive. The attackers specifically looted cash and jewellery during the assault, which supports the possibility of a criminal intent driven by material gain. In the absence of verified evidence linking the violence directly to hostility against the victim’s Hindu identity, the motive cannot be conclusively determined.
Given these circumstances, the case remains inconclusive regarding religious motivation. While the broader environment of repeated attacks on Hindu families in Bangladesh provides important contextual background, the available facts in this specific incident do not yet establish it as a clearly faith-targeted crime. If further evidence emerges indicating religious hostility as a driving factor, the case will be reassessed accordingly.
51. Hindu Families Coerced for Conversion in Udham Singh Nagar Through Inducements, Denigration of Hinduism, and Death Threats
In Khatima and Nanakamatta areas of Udham Singh Nagar district, Uttarakhand, a structured conversion network was found targeting economically vulnerable Hindu families, including members of the Tharu community and Scheduled Caste households, with financial inducements and coercive pressure to adopt Christianity. The group allegedly offered Rs 6,000 per month along with a lump sum of Rs 2 lakh to those willing to convert, while those who refused were threatened with violence, including harm to themselves and their children.
According to complaints filed by local Hindu residents, the network had been active for an extended period, systematically identifying poor families, individuals facing illness, and socially vulnerable households. These families were approached with promises that conversion would bring financial stability, cure illnesses, and resolve personal and domestic difficulties. The approach combined material inducements with psychological persuasion to push religious conversion.
The activities also included organised prayer meetings where Hinduism was allegedly denigrated through misleading and derogatory statements. Religious texts and materials were distributed during these gatherings, and attendees were gradually prepared for conversion through repeated messaging and indoctrination. Individuals who resisted or expressed reluctance were warned of serious consequences, including threats of violence.
Two separate complaints brought the matter into formal investigation. In one instance, a local resident reported that several individuals were actively targeting Tharu villages and economically weaker Hindu families for conversion. In another complaint, a Hindu woman alleged that her husband and others were pressuring her to convert, abusing her when she refused, and threatening to kill her and harm her children.
Following these complaints, police carried out coordinated raids and arrested four individuals linked to the network. A mobile phone recovered during the investigation reportedly contained photographs and videos of prayer meetings, baptism-related materials, financial transaction records, conversion targets, and audio recordings. The digital evidence also indicated systematic planning, including documentation of outreach activities and conversion-related communications.
The incident highlights a pattern of targeting Hindu families based on economic and social vulnerability, where inducements were paired with intimidation to secure conversions. The use of monetary incentives alongside threats created a coercive environment in which refusal carried the risk of harm, while acceptance promised financial relief.
Further, the organised nature of the activities, including structured meetings, documented targets, and repeated engagement with vulnerable communities, indicates a coordinated effort rather than isolated incidents of religious preaching. The allegations also point to the use of denigration of Hindu beliefs as part of the conversion strategy, aimed at weakening religious confidence before exerting pressure for conversion.
At its core, the case reflects exploitation of vulnerable Hindu families through a combination of inducement, psychological pressure, and coercion, with threats of violence reinforcing compliance. The targeting of individuals specifically because of their religious identity, combined with attempts to detach them from their faith under pressure, places the incident within the broader pattern of predatory proselytisation reported from the region.
Following police action and arrests, further investigation is underway to identify additional members of the network and determine the full scope of its operations across the district.
52. BJP Youth Leader in Kolkata Targeted With “Sar Tan Se Juda” Beheading Threats Over Political and Religious Identity
In Kolkata, West Bengal, Hindu BJP youth leader Shaunak Marik from the Rajabazar area was allegedly issued explicit “Sar Tan Se Juda” beheading threats by individuals linked to the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) on 10 May 2026. The threats reportedly emerged in the context of rising political tensions in the locality and were later brought to public attention through a video statement shared on social media.
The incident came to light when BJP Minority Morcha leader Nazia Elahi Khan posted a video on her official X account on 11 May 2026. In her statement, she claimed that Shaunak Marik was being threatened with beheading for his association with the Bharatiya Janata Party and for his involvement in maintaining law and order in the area. She also stated that the accused warned he would be killed within three days, escalating concerns over his safety.
In the video recorded outside Narkeldanga Police Station, Nazia Elahi Khan was seen accompanying Shaunak Marik and other BJP workers while seeking police protection. She described the threats as being issued by local political workers and expressed concern over the growing climate of intimidation against Hindu activists in the area. She also criticised the ruling political establishment in West Bengal, alleging that such threats reflected a dangerous pattern of targeted intimidation against Hindu political workers.
The threats reportedly included the use of the phrase “Sar Tan Se Juda,” a slogan associated with calls for beheading, which has been widely used in communal contexts across parts of India in incidents linked to religiously charged violence. In this case, it was directed at a Hindu political worker without any reported provocation involving religious insult, raising concerns over the communal framing of the threat.
The victim was reportedly targeted due to his association with the BJP and his role as a Hindu political activist in the locality. The use of explicitly violent language, combined with its linkage to his identity and political affiliation, transformed the incident into one of intimidation beyond routine political rivalry. The threats carried a clear message of physical harm directed at a Hindu individual seen as representing Hindu political assertion in the area.
Such rhetoric, when used in a politically charged environment, functions not only as a personal threat but also as a broader warning aimed at discouraging Hindu political participation and visibility. The invocation of beheading language added a severe dimension of religiously framed violence, intensifying the impact of the threat on both the individual and the wider community he represents.
53. Hindu Student Pressured to Remove Tilak During Examination by Muslim College Faculty in Dehradun
In Dehradun, Uttarakhand, a Hindu student enrolled at Baba Farid Institute of Technology was allegedly pressured by faculty members to remove his tilak during college examinations. The student, Mohit Kumar, stated that he was asked to remove his tilak before appearing for his exam and was repeatedly discouraged from wearing both tilak and kalava within the campus.
The incident came to public attention after the student approached a Hindu organisation and recorded his testimony in a video that later circulated on social media. In his statement, he alleged that a senior college official, Mohammad Aslam Siddiqui, objected to his wearing of tilak and kalava and had earlier instructed him not to attend college with these symbols. During the examination, another faculty member, identified as Ahmed Masood, reportedly directed him to remove the tilak before being allowed to write the paper, despite the student having completed all academic requirements and paid his fees.
The student further alleged that this was part of a repeated pattern of behaviour, where he was singled out for wearing visible Hindu religious symbols. He also claimed that he faced rude treatment and disregard of grievances when he raised concerns about his situation within the institution.
The student is a Hindu male pursuing his studies at the institute in Dehradun. He stated that he was targeted specifically for wearing religious symbols associated with Hindu practice, including the tilak applied on the forehead and the kalava tied on the wrist as part of traditional rituals.
The faculty members involved are identified in the allegations as Mohammad Aslam Siddiqui, serving in a senior administrative role at the institution, and Ahmed Masood, a teaching staff member who was present during the examination. Following the incident, local organisations raised objections and demanded action, warning of consequences if the student was further harassed.
The matter gained attention after the testimony circulated publicly, prompting reactions from local groups who described it as an instance of religious discrimination within the academic environment.
54. Hindu Residents Targeted for Conversion Through Inducements and Intimidation By Christian Man in Udham Singh Nagar
In Gadarpur tehsil of Udham Singh Nagar district, Uttarakhand, Hindu residents were allegedly targeted for religious conversion through inducements, psychological pressure, and intimidation by a Christian man identified as Surendra Sagar along with his associates. The activity came under scrutiny after complaints were raised by local residents and Hindu organisations, prompting an administrative inquiry into the matter.
Officials conducted an inspection in Budhiya Colony, Majra Sheela, Ramjivanpur, where a prayer hall was found operating on residential land without proper authorisation. According to the findings, prayer meetings were being conducted at the premises while conversion-related complaints were simultaneously being raised by locals. Residents alleged that Hindu families in the area were being offered inducements and subjected to pressure to convert to Christianity.
Local accounts further stated that financial and social incentives were being used to influence vulnerable Hindu families, while those resisting were reportedly intimidated. The activities were not limited to a single location, with allegations suggesting similar efforts in nearby villages as well.
As the matter escalated, a large number of residents gathered at the site, following which an administrative team accompanied by police forces intervened and issued official notices. Authorities directed initiation of legal proceedings and constituted a special team to investigate the activities linked to the premises and individuals involved.
The individual identified in the complaint, Surendra Sagar, is stated to have been operating the prayer meetings on land purchased from outside the state, allegedly used for purposes beyond its permitted classification. He, along with unnamed associates, has been accused of conducting conversion-related activities targeting Hindu residents in the region.
Officials confirmed that the matter is under investigation and further legal action is being taken based on the findings and complaints received from local residents and organisations.
55. Hindu saints and Warkari tradition denigrated and labelled “regressive” and “bigoted” by political leaders in Pune, Maharashtra
In Pune, Maharashtra, remarks made by Sharad Pawar, leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, and Vikas Lawande, spokesperson of his faction, sparked controversy after they were perceived as denigrating the Warkari Sampraday, Hindu saints, and devotional traditions. The statements were made during and around a public meeting addressing the Warkari tradition.
Sharad Pawar reportedly stated that “regressionist thoughts” had entered the Warkari Sampraday and further claimed that a significant portion of Warkaris were “bigoted”. Vikas Lawande later added to the controversy by stating that the Warkari sect was separate from Sanatan Dharma and publicly referring to several revered Warkari saints and kirtankars as “regressive”.
The remarks were strongly opposed by Hindu devotees and Warkari followers, who viewed them as an insult to a centuries-old bhakti tradition rooted in devotion to Lord Vitthal and associated with saints such as Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj, Sant Tukaram Maharaj, Sant Eknath Maharaj, and Sant Namdev Maharaj. Devotees also highlighted that core Warkari literature, including the Dnyaneshwari, Eknathi Bhagwat, and abhangas, are deeply embedded in Hindu scriptural and devotional traditions.
On the same day, protests broke out in Loni Kalbhor area, where Vikas Lawande was confronted and ink was thrown at him by individuals opposing his remarks. Following the incident, he lodged a complaint at the local police station.
The incident was also viewed against earlier remarks made by leaders associated with the same political faction, including statements by Jitendra Awhad that were widely criticised for being derogatory towards Sanatan Dharma and Hindu historical figures.
Taken together, the statements and reactions formed a wider controversy in which Hindu religious traditions, saints, and devotional identities were at the centre of political criticism and public anger.
56. Hindu residents targeted for conversion under guise of prayer and healing meetings by Christian pastors in Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh
In Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh, multiple prayer and healing meetings conducted by Christian pastors across several localities triggered protests by members of Hindu organisations, including Hindu Jagran Manch. The meetings were reported from areas such as Kamal Vihar, Sen Chowk, Shriram Nagar, Ambedkar Chowk, Madrasa Gali near Shyamtarai Mandi, Depot Para Sorid, Tikrapara, and Rudri Road, where Hindu activists alleged that conversion attempts were being carried out under the guise of religious gatherings.
Local Hindu activists stated that these prayer and healing sessions had been continuing in both urban and rural parts of the district despite repeated complaints to the administration. During visits to these venues, activists said large gatherings were found and questioned the organisers, including pastors, regarding the nature of the meetings. According to them, the gatherings were being used to influence Hindu participants towards religious conversion through healing claims and prayer-based outreach. They also raised concerns that several organisers were from outside the state and demanded stricter enforcement of anti-conversion provisions.
The situation escalated into confrontations at multiple locations, following which police forces were deployed to maintain order. Hindu organisations submitted memorandums earlier to district authorities and the Superintendent of Police, urging action against what they described as conversion-linked activities being conducted through such meetings.
Organisational leaders warned that continued inaction by authorities would lead to intensified protests across the district. On the other side, pastors associated with the gatherings denied any involvement in conversion activities and described the events as religious prayer meetings.
The incident took place in the backdrop of the recently implemented anti-conversion law in Chhattisgarh, which regulates conversions carried out through coercion, inducement, fraud, or misrepresentation and mandates procedural compliance for voluntary conversions.
57. Hindu sentiments insulted after remarks against Hindu deities and idol worship during programme by Baba Rampal followers in Barwani, Madhya Pradesh
In Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh, a controversy emerged after a programme organised by followers of Baba Rampal in Krishna State Colony allegedly involved remarks against Hindu deities and idol worship. The event was held in the C Block area of the colony, where a tent had been set up and religious teachings were being shared.
Local residents objected to the programme, stating that the content being delivered included statements opposing Hindu deities and discouraging idol worship. They said the gathering was being conducted without proper permission and was drawing participants, including children, from nearby areas, leading to unrest in the locality. The situation escalated as residents opposed the continuation of the programme and eventually brought it to a halt.
According to a local resident, the organisers had recently moved into the colony and were conducting repeated gatherings based on Baba Rampal’s teachings. The residents expressed concern over the nature of the messaging being shared and its impact on the local Hindu community. They later indicated that a formal police complaint would be filed against the organisers.
Disputes also arose over permissions for the event. While organisers claimed they had approval for conducting the programme, local reports suggested that such long-term permission was unlikely to have been granted. The owner of the premises also stated that the event was organised without consent. Police officials reached the spot and began an inquiry, stating that no prior information or permission had been recorded with the authorities.
58. Bangladeshi Islamic preacher issues violent mobilisation call against India and Hindus
In Bangladesh, a video circulating on social media showed an Islamic preacher delivering inflammatory remarks targeting India and Hindus, including calls for collective mobilisation and violence. The preacher, identified as the leader of the outfit ‘Insaf Kayemkari Chhatra Sramik Janata’, made the statements during a public speech that later spread widely online.
In the video, the preacher called for an attack on India with alleged support from Pakistan and Indian Muslims, making explicit claims about capturing Indian territory within hours. He further referred to the large Muslim population in India, stating that their collective strength was sufficient to overpower Hindus and warning that Hindus would not survive if Muslims were mobilised in anger.
The speech also included references to several Indian political leaders, stating that they would be forced to apologise to Muslims. Alongside these remarks, the preacher accused India of injustice and portrayed Muslims as a community requiring mobilisation and retaliation, framing the message in explicitly communal terms.
The video content has been described as containing violent rhetoric and hate speech directed against Hindus and India, with repeated references to religious identity being used as a basis for confrontation and intimidation.
59. Hindu Temple in Shillong Vandalised, Idols and Ornaments Looted in Late-Night Attack
In Shillong’s Garikhana area under Lumdiengjri Police Station limits, a Hanuman temple was vandalised and looted by unidentified miscreants in the early hours of 10 May 2026. The incident took place around 1:00 a.m. and involved forced entry into the temple premises after breaking open a side entrance.
According to the complaint filed by Ravi Sharma, the intruders disabled the CCTV system before entering the shrine. They then desecrated the temple premises and stole idols of Lord Krishna and Radha, a small idol of Lord Hanuman, silver ornaments, brass ritual items including water pots, lamps and plates, along with cash from the donation box. The main idol inside the sanctum remained untouched during the incident.
The miscreants also set fire to CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the temple in an attempt to destroy evidence before fleeing the spot. Later, police obtained partial footage from nearby residential surveillance cameras, which reportedly captured the accused escaping from the area.
The incident triggered concern among residents of Garikhana and nearby Jhalupara, who raised questions over night patrolling and security arrangements around places of worship. Police registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter. At the time of reporting, no arrests had been made.
The incidents reported between May 4 and May 10, 2026, collectively point toward a week marked by repeated tensions across religious, social, and political domains. A large number of cases involved allegations of violence, coercion, intimidation, and disputes linked to interfaith relationships, religious conversion claims, and attacks on places of worship. These developments, reported from multiple states as well as Bangladesh, underline the persistence of localised conflicts that escalated into broader community sensitivities in several instances.
At the same time, several cases also involved administrative interventions, arrests, and ongoing investigations, indicating active law enforcement responses in many situations. However, a significant number of incidents remain under inquiry or sub judice, reflecting the complexity and evolving nature of these cases as authorities continue to examine evidence and determine accountability.
