Mira-Bhayandar (Maharashtra): Communal tensions escalated in the Mira Road area of Mira-Bhayandar after a dispute broke out inside a housing complex over goats allegedly brought in for Bakrid, triggering protests, violence, and a politically sensitive standoff. For those who may not know, Mira-Bhayandar is a city and municipal corporation in Thane district, largely a part of the extension of Mumbai metropolis.

According to local accounts, residents of the Poonam Estate cluster objected to goats being housed within the society premises for several days, citing hygiene concerns, foul smell, and health issues. The disagreement soon spiralled into a larger confrontation, drawing members from Hindu organisations including Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad to the spot.
In some housing societies, Muslim families had set up sheds for animal slaughters on the impending Bakri Eid festival, in contravention of the much publicised rules that say the Qurbani rituals must take place only in designated slaughter houses and certainly not in housing complexes.
Knowing that @MBVVPOLICE and @My_MBMC are demolishing the shade made for slaughtering, @INCIndia Corporator and daughter of @MuzaffarHussain reached the society to allow the slaughtering.

Knife Attack Amid Heavy Police Presence
Durgesh Jaiswal, Bajrang Dal’s local president, claimed that the situation turned violent when a Muslim youth approached VHP workers and attempted to attack a key functionary identified as Nagnath Kamble.

He alleged that the Muslim youth was armed with a sharp knife and seemed to have prior knowledge of VHP leadership and hierarchy. He pulled out the knife and charged despite a significant police presence. A Bajrang Dal activist named Harsh reportedly intervened and sustained injuries while stopping the attack. Police later detained the attacker and a complaint was filed at Kashimira police station.

Harsh, the injured activist, suffered a deep cut requiring stitches and informed that two others were also gravely hurt in the confrontation. He further accused the police of inaction and claimed that threats were issued during the altercation.
Residents Cite Health Concerns
Amid the political and communal overtones, some local residents also highlighted the health and civic inconveniences of living in horrific conditions with sacrificial lambs in the same building. One resident said that living conditions had deteriorated due to the presence of animals inside the housing complex, citing foul smell, sleeplessness, and rising health complaints.
Counter-Protest: Pig Brought to Site, Police Step In
In a dramatic escalation, another group associated with Hindu organisations brought a pig to the protest site, describing it as a “pet” and drawing parallels with the acceptance of goats in the same locality. The move triggered immediate police action, with officers intervening and removing the animal from the scene.

Law-and-Order Lens: State’s Crackdown Context
The incident unfolds against the backdrop of a broader law-and-order push by the Maharashtra government under Devendra Fadnavis, which has recently invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act against illegal cattle trade networks.
In a notable intervention, Minority Commission Chairman Pyare Khan publicly backed the crackdown, urging compliance with the law and stressing that religious practices such as Qurbani must not violate legal norms or cause inconvenience to others.
