Keralam: Delay in CM selection frustrates IUML; party hopeful of Deputy CM post

The delay in announcing the Kerala Chief Minister after the UDF’s massive electoral victory has reportedly triggered frustration within the Indian Union Muslim League, with party leaders expressing concern over growing dissatisfaction among workers and voters.

Indian Union Muslim League is quite unhappy about the delay in the selection of the Chief Minister to lead the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), even on the eighth day after the vote counting. The counting took place on May 4. The Muslim League says that they are not able to carry out even a victory march as the leader of the legislature party has not been elected yet. And, they are not able to answer the questions of their voters. They expressed the difficulties they come across even in facing the people when they meet them.

The Muslim League says that a lot of activity has to be carried out after the government takes over. The UDF leaders and workers cannot forget the promises they gave to the voters during the election campaign. It is not right to forget them and sit back.

Now, the people have started to think that they should not have given the UDF such a massive majority. And, the people think that there is no need to conduct any more celebrations after the CM selection is declared. Even women voters are asking the League leaders why they asked them to vote for the Congress/UDF.

Another factor which keeps annoying the Muslim League is the public statements of the Congress leaders. They believe that these sorts of statements demoralise the workers of different parties which constitute the UDF.

Muslim League leader P. Abdul Hamneed MLA said that his party would honour the decision of the Congress High Command with regard to the selection of the Chief Minister.

He expressed confidence that Congress would give the deputy chief ministership to his party. They would not demand it. They have been enjoying long-standing relations with the Congress.

Meanwhile, reports from the Malabar area suggest that the Congress MLAs who supported K.C. Venugopal’s candidacy when the high command delegation came to the state to gauge the mood of the Congress MLAs have invited the wrath of the Muslim League. It is reported that the League would keep those MLAs away from the programmes. K. Jayanth and A.P. Anilkumar are said to be the Congress leaders who come under this category.

The Muslim League has been supporting V.D. Satheeshan as the best Chief Minister candidate even before the polling. Satheeshan has been supporting the communal stands of the Muslim League.

He even went to the extent of stating that Jamaat-e-Islami is not communal and that they have given up the doctrine of the ‘theocratic state’. But, they immediately shot back saying that they have not given up any of their basic tenets.

Now, Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama leader Nasser Faisi Koodathai has come out with a social media post in support of V.D. Satheeshan. He says Satheeshan exposed the Hindu/Christian appeasement of the CPM. Jamaat-e-Islami is also in favour of Satheeshan. All are happy with him because he did not utter a word against Muslim League leader K.M. Shaji when he openly declared that “Religion, religion, religion is important for the League”. He said the League fights elections to give favours to the Muslim community when it comes to power.

The CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) is gloomy too. To add insult to the injury of the humiliating election debacle, they are still in the dark with respect to the selection of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP). The CPM Polit Bureau met in Delhi, whereas the state secretariat and state committee met in Thiruvananthapuram. Still, they have not zeroed in on an Opposition leader. There are reports that most of the leaders are against Pinarayi, thanks to his arrogance and several other qualities which they think are the reasons for the election debacle.
