A major literary event unfolded in Kochi on April 20, as former Mizoram and Goa Governor P. S. Sreedharan Pillai marked the release of his 255th book, titled “Chiriyum Chinthayum Karutha Kottil” (The Laugh and Thought in Black Coat).

The book, a compilation of his experiences in the legal profession, blends humour with serious reflections drawn from courtroom life, offering readers insight into both the lighter and deeper dimensions of law.

The release ceremony was led by renowned filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, who presented the first copy to Justice S. Manu. The event also saw the presence of eminent writer C. Radhakrishnan, who inaugurated the gathering and remarked that only a person with refined qualities and a deep appreciation for nature could produce such a work.

Presiding over the programme, former Supreme Court judge Cyriac Joseph highlighted the significance of the book, while writer Payipra Radhakrishnan introduced it to the audience. Several legal and literary figures, including High Court Lawyers’ Association president Peeyush Kottam, Adv. Joseph Thomas, and C.G. Rajagopal, also addressed the gathering.

Speaking on the occasion, Sreedharan Pillai reflected on his enduring passion for the legal profession, stating his fondness for the traditional black gown worn by lawyers. He revealed plans to re-enter legal practice, calling it an unusual move given his previous position in the national protocol hierarchy, following the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister.

He also spoke about his initiatives to encourage emerging writers over the years.

Sreedharan Pillai began his public life as a Bala Swayamsevak in Chengannoor under the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and later joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad during his college years. He went on to serve two terms as Kerala BJP president and played a key role in expanding the party’s presence in Lakshadweep.
