Koppal: In a dramatic real-life episode that mirrors a cinematic storyline, an interfaith couple from Koppal district has approached the police seeking protection, fearing a possible attack from the woman’s family after their marriage against parental wishes.

The couple Keshav, a Hindu youth  from Hulihyder village in Kanakagiri taluk, and Tasleema, a Muslim woman from Sulekal village in Gangavathi taluk fell in love during regular bus journeys. What began as a casual acquaintance gradually blossomed into a relationship over the past two years, ultimately culminating in marriage despite strong opposition from the woman’s family.

From bus journey to temple wedding

According to the couple, their love story began during daily bus commutes between their respective villages. Frequent interactions soon turned into a close bond and eventually into a committed relationship. However, their interfaith relationship did not go down well with Tasleema’s family.

Sources say her family had been pressuring her to marry a man of their choice. Fearing separation, the couple decided to take matters into their own hands. They reportedly got married at a temple in Kanakagiri, following Hindu rituals. After the wedding, Tasleema was seen wearing kumkum on her forehead and adopting traditional Hindu customs, symbolising her decision to stay with Keshav. The marriage, however, has triggered a controversy among girls family. .

Fear of retaliation from family

Soon after their marriage, the couple began receiving threats, allegedly from the woman’s family members. Apprehending danger to their lives, they approached the office of the Superintendent of Police in Koppal, seeking immediate protection.

“We are scared that her family might attack us. We just want to live peacefully. Nobody should harm us”, the couple said, speaking to media persons outside the SP office. Tasleema, visibly distressed, appealed to authorities to ensure their safety and allow them to lead their married life without interference. The couple was accompanied by a lawyer while submitting their plea, indicating the seriousness of their concerns.

Police on alert, situation sensitive

Police officials have acknowledged the complaint and are understood to be assessing the threat perception. Given the sensitive nature of interfaith marriages and the potential for communal tension, authorities are expected to take precautionary measures. While no official statement has been issued yet regarding specific security arrangements, sources indicate that local police may keep a close watch on both families to prevent any untoward incident.

Wider debate fuels tension

The incident comes at a time when debates around interfaith marriages,   “love jihad”, continue to dominate public discourse in several parts of the country. The Koppal case has added fresh fuel to the ongoing discussions, drawing attention on social media and local political circles.

Observers note that such cases often escalate quickly due to societal pressures, honour-related concerns, and community sensitivities. In many instances, couples face severe backlash, forcing them to seek legal and police protection.

Uncertain road ahead

For Keshav and Tasleema, the immediate concern remains safety. While they have asserted their right to marry and live together, the reaction from the woman’s family could determine how the situation unfolds in the coming days. Legal experts point out that as consenting adults, the couple has the constitutional right to choose their partner. However, ground realities often present challenges, especially in cases involving interfaith unions in rural areas.

As police step in to assess the situation, all eyes are now on how authorities handle the case and whether adequate protection will be provided to the couple. Despite the woman wholeheartedly accepts the original culture of land , fundamentalists opposing alliance since many weeks just because the woman left following Arabic culture.
