Guwahati: Double standard is what it takes to describe the Congress party. In the South it fights against the Left and in the Northeast, Congress is a friend of the Left, only to retain power. A party with no ideological value and zero care for the common people.
“The moment the election campaign has commenced, the Congress party and its alliance partners stand thoroughly exposed in their glaring contradictions. According to senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, the gravest concern for India lies in Marxist forces, particularly because Kerala is governed by a Communist, which, as per their own assertions, has led to the systematic degradation of the state.
The Congress party has repeatedly portrayed Communists as a formidable threat to the nation. Yet, in a striking display of political hypocrisy, the very same Congress has entered into an electoral alliance with the CPM in Assam. How does a party deemed an adversary in Kerala suddenly transform into a trusted ally in Assam? The Congress owes a clear and honest answer to the people of Assam.
“This duplicity exemplifies how the Congress has consistently misled the citizens of India”, alleged BJP. Addressing a press conference, Assam BJP spokesperson Ranjeeb Kumar Sarmah remarked that the Congress party has already conceded defeat in the Assam elections. He asserted that the central leadership of Congress has displayed a complete lack of seriousness towards the Assam polls.
The Congress party is presently in a state of profound political irrelevance and disarray. Owing to this shrinking political space, the party has now been reduced to contesting primarily in merely 22 minority-dominated constituencies. He further asserted that in regions where indigenous and native communities hold dominance, the Congress lacks any substantial organisational foundation. The people of Assam, he concluded, have already politically rejected the Congress party in its entirety.
“Five Maha Paap” of Congress
Criticizing the Congress party, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan described decades of neglect, misgovernance and injustice toward Assam. Addressing a massive public rally in Rangia in support of BJP candidate Bhavesh Kalita, Union Minister Chouhan reflected on his long association with Assam, recalling a time when the state grappled with fear, insurgency and severely underdeveloped infrastructure.
He noted that areas once inaccessible due to poor road conditions and security concerns have now witnessed unprecedented growth, connectivity and stability, making Assam a source of pride for the entire nation. Chouhan accused the Congress of committing five historic “Maha Paap” against Assam, the repercussions of which, he said, were felt for decades.
He stated that during the time of Partition, there was a proposal to merge Assam with Pakistan, which was averted only due to the determined efforts of Gopinath Bordoloi. Referring to the 1962 Chinese aggression, he alleged that the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru left Assam vulnerable, leading to panic and disorder, particularly in Tezpur. He further claimed that Congress, driven by vote bank politics, allowed large-scale infiltration that threatened Assam’s identity, culture and ecological heritage, including sensitive regions such as Kaziranga.
He also criticized the party for failing to adequately honour Assam’s towering personalities, noting that leaders like Bordoloi were not accorded timely national recognition, while cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika received due recognition only in recent owing to efforts of the BJP government. Additionally, he alleged that during the Assam Movement, democratic voices, especially those of students, were suppressed through force.
Launching a broader critique of Congress, Chouhan stated that the party has historically undermined democratic values and continues to operate through what he termed “parachute leadership”, where power is inherited rather than earned through grassroots engagement. He alleged that the party’s opposition to key national initiatives is often driven by narrow political considerations and vote-bank compulsions.
Commenting on the current political scenario, he remarked that Congress is facing deep internal divisions and a leadership crisis, describing the situation in Assam as a “Raja versus Rajkumar” power struggle. He further alleged that the recent political entry of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has coincided with growing instability within the party, with several leaders reportedly distancing themselves and many others waiting to exit. According to him, the party today stands fragmented, directionless and disconnected from the aspirations of the people.
