As the geopolitical conflict of West Asia escalates, inflicted by the hard-nosed contest between the US-Israel axis and Iran, the United States Central Command has confirmed the death of the Iranian Naval commander who led the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps(IRGC) Navy. Alireza Tangsiri as the IRGC Naval Commander was a mastermind who had a core and comprehensive grasp of the Strait of Hormuz. By understanding the dynamics of the strategic energy chokepoint that was responsible for the one-fifth of global energy supply, Tangsiri rendered Iran a strategic edge in the geopolitical landscape of West Asia. Alireza Tangsiri was killed as an impact of the Israeli strikes at Bandar Abbas near the Strait of Hormuz.
As a core member of the rigid IRGC apparatus and as a hardliner, Alireza Tangsiri was a pivotal pillar for the theocracy of Tehran. Thus, does his elimination render a major strategic blow to the theocracy of Tehran in its confrontation in West Asia? Will Iran lose control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz as an impact of the death of the IRGC Naval Commander? Tangsiri became the commander of the IRGC’s maritime forces in 2018. Thus, he headed the Navy for a prolonged eight years and controlled the naval power structure.
It is said that Alireza Tangsiri during his tenure as the IRGC Naval commander, strengthened the maritime force of the country and extended Iranian influence across the Persian gulf. He had also pioneered unconventional weapons into the IRGC Navy thus aiming to extend a hardline influence of the theocracy of Tehran across the maritime domain of West Asia. He strived to accelerate the Iranian sphere of influence in the geopolitical chessboard of West Asia. His elimination, thus, can thus cause a pivotal void in the theocratic power structure of Tehran at least for the time being, when the country is in the midst of an existential conflict.
US had designated Tangsiri as “Global Terrorist”
The United States in 2019 had designated the Chief of IRGC Navy Alireza Tangsiri as the “Specially Designated Global Terrorist”. In 2024, additional sanctions were imposed on him for developing dreadful drones that threatened the security architecture of the Strait of Hormuz and West Asia at large. The United States stated that as the head of the IRGC Navy, Tangsiri made revolutionary attempts to fuel new weapon systems into the Iranian maritime forces. He indulged in testing of cruise missiles and armed drones. These weapons have the ability to completely block the Strait of Hormuz.
Tangsiri also accelerated the inclusion of fast boats into the IRGC Navy. These boats are light and flexible that have the capability to threaten the civilian vessels, oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz. On these grounds, Washington DC had designated Alireza Tangsiri as a “global terrorist” claiming that he is a threat to security. The IRGC Naval Chief had also continuously warned the United States about ground invasion attempts. If a ground assault is launched that would be a “death to the United States”, Tangsiri had asserted. Thus, the death of the naval commander who was at the helm of IRGC will cause significant damage to the power structure of Tehran despite any recalibration.
The West Asia conflict escalates
Despite inflicting considerable damage to the entire geopolitical, security and energy landscape of West Asia and beyond, the confrontation between the US-Israel axis and Iran, sees no sign of de-escalation. The US military after killing Alireza Tangsiri has warned that it will continue strikes on the IRGC Navy. It has also issued warning to all the men serving in the Iranian Navy to abandon their posts and return home to avoid unnecessary injury or death.
The United States has also exclaimed that the IRGC Naval Commander Alireza Tangsiri was responsible for the death of thousands of innocent merchants & civilians who were passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Over the eight years, he has attacked hundreds of vessels with missiles and drones passing through the maritime passage, the US military further claimed. Tangsiri was also known for dramatically expanding the IRGC Navy and enhancing its capabilities. He was a loyal commander of the clerical rule in Tehran. His elimination has indeed created a loophole in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps(IRGC) power structure.
It is a major strategic setback to the theocracy in Tehran. However, the death of Naval Commander Alireza Tangsiri does not derive an ultimatum to the conflict in West Asia. Iran might fill the temporary void created in its power structure and re-energize the IRGC. Iran still strives to control the Strait of Hormuz. Because Tehran considers the control of the maritime passage as a key to gain a strategic edge in the war. On the other hand, the US and Israel are also escalating the strikes. In the midst of all these crises and hegemonic contests, the security landscape of West Asia and beyond remains in doldrums. The energy security of the globe is oscillating with unpredictability.
