TURA: Illegal Rohingya intruders are behind the recent violence in Garo Hills in Meghalaya, alleged Tura MP Saleng A Sangma, reported by local media in Meghalaya.
In a stark warning amid escalating tensions, Congress MP Saleng A. Sangma from Tura has alerted Union Home Minister Amit Shah to a severe communal crisis unfolding in Meghalaya’s riot-affected Garo Hills districts, indicating direct involvement of Rohingya intruders in the violence that rattled the region last week.
MP Sangma’s urgent letter, penned on Wednesday, accuses illegal Rohingya migrants of launching attacks on local tribal populations. He claims these intruders are destroying sacred religious statues, issuing mass eviction orders, and aiming to seize control of the entire region.
The MP has demanded swift action by the central government to protect the lives and property of vulnerable tribal communities within his Tura Lok Sabha constituency. With the area’s proximity to volatile borders heightening risks, he urged the Prime Minister-led Cabinet Committee on Security to address this “rapidly emerging and dangerous” threat immediately.
Compounding fears are menacing posters plastered across hotspots in West Garo Hills, such as Rajabala, Tikrikilla, Phulbari, and nearby zones. These notices deliver blunt ultimatums, pressuring tribal residents to abandon their homes by year’s end and quit the districts altogether.
Meghalaya Police arrested former Member of District Council (MDC) Sofiur Rehman from Balachanda constituency early Monday morning. The arrest stems from allegations of inciting communal disharmony and violence.
Rehman, a former Member of the District Council (MDC), was picked up around 1 a.m. from his residence in New Bhaitbari, under the jurisdiction of Rajabala Police Station in West Garo Hills. Authorities invoked sections related to incitement to violence and communal discord, linking him to the recent flare-up of unrest in the area.
BJP also termed the violence as an issue created by infiltrators. Illegal Bangladeshi intruders marrying local tribal girls, obtaining forged documents, and committing electoral encroachment have become a major threat to the locals.
Senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha MP Ravi Shankar Prasad sharply criticised the situation, attributing the violence to unchecked illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. Speaking at a press conference at the BJP’s central office in New Delhi, Prasad reaffirmed the party’s solidarity with Garo Hills’ tribal communities.
