A police team from Meghalaya was allegedly attacked by a mob in the communally sensitive district of Nuh district in Haryana while escorting an ATM robbery suspect, officials said. The incident took place on March 10 near Sikrawa village, where a group of people reportedly attempted to free the accused from police custody.

According to police officials, the suspect, identified as Razul Khan, was arrested in connection with multiple ATM robbery cases and was being taken to Meghalaya on transit remand. However, during the journey, a crowd allegedly intercepted the police vehicle and tried to help the accused escape.

Investigators said Razul Khan is wanted in several ATM robbery cases registered in different states. Police records indicate that cases against him were registered in 2020 at Dwarka and Dabri police stations in Delhi. He is also wanted by the Special Cell of Meghalaya Police in a 2021 case and is suspected to be involved in similar offences in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Visuals from the scene show a large group of people surrounding the police vehicle, attempting to stop the convoy and vandalising the vehicle. The situation quickly escalated when members of the crowd allegedly tried to snatch the keys of the police vehicle and seize the weapons of police personnel.

Meghalaya police reached Nuh (Mewat) in Haryana to arrest an accused Razul Khan in ATM robbery case.

When police arrested him, a mob gathered on the road, pelted stones at police vehicle, and attempted to free the accused.

Officials said the police were forced to fire blank shots in self-defence to disperse the mob and prevent the accused from escaping. During the incident, a youth identified as Tariq Khan sustained a bullet injury in his leg.

Speaking about the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police (Nuh) Ayush Yadav said the attack occurred when a Meghalaya Police team arrived in Wajidpur village to arrest Razul Khan in connection with an ATM robbery case.

The complaint in the case was filed by Sub-Inspector Arkidalang Wahlang, who is posted in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. According to the complaint, the Meghalaya Police team had arrested Razul Khan, son of Mohammad Rafiq and a resident of Wajidpur village in Pinangwan area, and was transporting him to Meghalaya after obtaining transit remand.

Following the incident, an FIR was registered against 12 individuals based on the complaint filed by the Meghalaya Police officer. Those named in the FIR include Naseem, Farooq, Maimuna, Sehruni, Mustakeem, Shahid, Khuddi, Khalid, Bhupat, Zafar and Tariq Khan, along with Razul Khan.

After the incident, teams from the local Pinangwan police station arrived at the scene and secured the area. During the investigation, police recovered two empty cartridges, blood samples and blood-stained clothes from the scene. A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) also visited the location and collected evidence.

Police officials said multiple teams have been formed to arrest the remaining accused named in the FIR. Authorities confirmed that further investigation into the case is ongoing.
