The Siege of Sanatan: From Mandir loot to ritual bans-exposing the systemic war on Hindu faith in Telangana

Between 2022 and 2026, Telangana has seen growing allegations of state interference in the religious affairs of the majority community. From controversial remarks on Hindu deities to Mandir demolitions and the diversion of Mandir funds, critics argue that administrative overreach has raised serious concerns about religious freedom and the autonomy of Hindu institutions

Between 2022 and 2026, Telangana emerged as a flashpoint for debates over religious freedom and state overreach. A series of controversial administrative decisions – ranging from unprecedented restrictions on traditional Ram Navami and Ayyappa rituals to the selective demolition of Mandirs and the contested diversion of Mandir funds for non-religious purposes – sparked widespread outrage across the state. For many, these incidents were not merely administrative lapses but a systematic interference in the institutional autonomy of the Hindu faith. This period of friction has ignited a powerful grassroots movement, with devotees and civil society increasingly demanding that Hindu religious institutions be liberated from political control and granted the same constitutional protections and self-governance enjoyed by other faiths.

The following timeline highlights nine key incidents between 2022 and 2026 that have sparked significant debate and protests regarding the treatment of Hindu traditions, institutions, and religious autonomy in Telangana.

Sacrilege in Barkas: Hanuman Murti Desecrated As State Silence Emboldens Miscreants

In a chilling act of communal hate, the Sri Dwimukhi Hanuman Mandir in Barkas, Hyderabad, was targeted by miscreants on February 24, 2026. The culprits broke through the Mandir’s iron grills to reach the sacred deity, desecrating the Sindhooram of the Hanuman murti and causing significant damage to the temple premises. This heinous act has sent shockwaves through the devotee community, who have denounced it as an “inhumane and cowardly” assault on their faith.

Adding insult to injury, rather than facilitating a spiritual healing process, the police reportedly intervened to stop priests from reciting the Hanuman Chalisa at the site. This suppression of prayer in the aftermath of a hate crime has fueled massive public anger. Devotees are now pointing toward a disturbing rise in temple attacks under the current Congress administration, demanding that the state stop its “soft-on-crime” approach and provide the iron-clad security that Hindu shrines deserve.

Justice vs. Bureaucracy: High Court Steps In As State Opposes Ancient ‘Nishan Yatra’

The Telangana High Court has had to intervene to protect the fundamental right to worship as the state government continues to place hurdles before Hindu religious processions. The court heard a petition for the annual Shree Shyam Baba Nishan Yatra, a peaceful tradition where devotees carry sacred flags and sing bhajans from Lal Darwaza to Kacheguda.

Shockingly, the state administration opposed the permission for this small gathering of 50 to 70 devotees, citing past “violations” and a pending case from 2025 – a move many see as a pretext to stifle Hindu cultural expression. While massive gatherings of other communities often proceed with state support, the peaceful Nishan Yatra faced stiff administrative resistance. By directing the police to examine the plea in accordance with constitutional provisions, the High Court has reminded the authorities that religious traditions cannot be arbitrarily suppressed by the state machinery.

The Politics of Derision: CM Revanth Reddy’s Mockery of Hindu Deities

In a shocking display of cultural insensitivity, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy sparked nationwide outrage on December 3, 2025, by making derogatory remarks about Hindu deities. During a political meeting, the CM attempted to use Hinduism as a punchline for a political analogy, stating that the faith has “one god for drinkers, another for the unmarried, and another for those married twice.”

By reducing the profound and diverse manifestations of the Divine in Sanatan Dharma to such crude and mocking categories, the Chief Minister has deeply wounded the religious sentiments of millions. Critics and devotees alike have slammed the statement as a reflection of the Congress party’s inherent bias, questioning why Hindu symbols and beliefs are frequently used as targets for political wit while other faiths remain untouched. The demand for a formal apology remains unheard, further fueling the sense of betrayal among the state’s majority community.

Sacred Heritage Crushed: 100-Year-Old Peddamma Talli Mandir Demolished in Banjara Hills

The streets of Banjara Hills became a site of mourning and anger on July 25, 2025, as the Telangana government deployed bulldozers to raze the 100-year-old Peddamma Talli Mandir. This ancient shrine, which stood as a pillar of faith for generations, was reduced to rubble under the guise of administrative orders, leaving the local Hindu community in a state of shock.

When devotees and activists sat on the roads in a peaceful attempt to protect their deity, the state responded with force. Instead of halting the demolition to address the people’s grievances, police forcibly removed and arrested the protesters. This selective destruction of a century-old Hindu place of worship has been condemned as a direct assault on the state’s cultural heritage, with many asking why “development” always seems to come at the cost of Hindu temples.

Silencing the Sacred: Police Move to Stop Ayyappa Puja on Christmas Day

In a blatant display of “secular” overreach, the Bhagyanagar police attempted to shut down a sacred Ayyappa Swamy Puja on December 25, 2024. As devotees were immersed in their 41-day Deeksha, performing bhajans and chanting the names of Bhagwan Ayyappa, authorities intervened, citing “loud noise” as a reason to halt the ceremony.

The irony of the situation was not lost on the public, as the intervention occurred on Christmas Day – a time when celebrations are widespread across the city. Devotees rightfully questioned why Hindu prayers were singled out for noise violations while other festivities were allowed to proceed without interference. This incident is being viewed as a clear case of religious profiling and a systematic attempt by the state machinery to suppress Hindu rituals under the pretext of administrative regulations.

A Direct Insult: Congress MLA Includes Cow Image in Bakrid Greetings

In a shocking display of insensitivity toward the core values of the majority community, Telangana Congress MLA Kumbam Anil Kumar Reddy sparked outrage on June 17, 2024. The legislator posted a Bakrid greeting on social media that deliberately included a graphic image of a cow, an animal revered as sacred and a mother figure in Hindu Dharma.

The inclusion of a cow in the context of a festival associated with animal sacrifice was seen as a provocative and highly disrespectful act. Devotees and cultural organisations have condemned this as a calculated insult to Hindu religious sentiments, questioning whether such a “mistake” would ever be tolerated if it involved the symbols of any other faith.

The Siege of Tradition: Hyderabad Police Deny Permission for Ram Navami Shobha Yatra

On April 17, 2024, the spirit of Ram Navami was met with administrative resistance as the Hyderabad police summarily rejected the application for the traditional Shobha Yatra from the Akashpuri Hanuman Mandir. This denial of permission for one of the most significant Hindu festivals has been viewed as a systematic attempt by the state government to stifle public expressions of Hindu identity.

While massive gatherings and processions of other communities often receive state-sponsored security and smooth passage, the Ram Navami Yatra was labelled a “security risk.” This blatant double standard led to widespread protests, with leaders vowing to continue the tradition despite the state’s attempts to lock the gates on Hindu festivities.

Sacrilege in the Sanctum: 50,000 Laddus Destroyed and Police Overreach at Bhadradri Mandir

The sacred Bhadradri Sri Seetha Ramachandra Swamy Temple became a site of dual controversy on January 10, 2023. Due to administrative mismanagement, 50,000 stale laddus had to be destroyed after they were left to mold, depriving thousands of devotees of Prasadam.

The situation escalated when local police officers reportedly entered the temple kitchen to “inspect” the premises without removing their shoes, a grave violation of temple sanctity. The priests and temple staff staged a fierce protest, condemning the police for their utter disregard for Hindu rituals and the purity of the Sannidhanam. This incident highlighted a disturbing trend of government officials treating ancient temples like common government offices rather than sacred spaces.

The Loot of Devotion: State Orders Mandirs to Fund Government Buildings

In a move that many have termed “Institutional Jizya,” the Telangana Endowment Department on September 22, 2022, ordered three prominent Hindu temples to cough up Rs1 crore each to fund the construction of a government office building. The Bhadrakali Mandir, Seetharamachandra Swamy Mandir, and the Sammakka-Saralamma organisers were told to divert devotee donations for a state administrative facility.

This order sparked massive outrage, as Hindu groups argued that the money dropped into Hundis by the faithful is meant strictly for Mandir maintenance, Vedic education, and Hindu charities—not to bolster the state’s real estate. This blatant diversion of Mandir wealth is being seen as a clear sign that the state views Hindu institutions as mere “revenue ATMs” while maintaining a “hands-off” policy toward the assets of other religious groups.

The long list of grievances – ranging from the desecration of murtis in Barkas to the silencing of Ayyappa chants and the restriction of Ram Navami traditions – paints a stark picture of a “secularism” that feels increasingly one-sided. When the state treats Hindu Mandirs as mere revenue-generating assets while simultaneously disregarding their sanctity and traditions, it strikes at the very soul of the community. These incidents are not isolated lapses; they represent a persistent disregard for the sentiments of millions. The growing unrest across Telangana is a clear signal that the era of silent endurance is over. The path forward demands a restoration of dignity for Hindu shrines, the protection of ancient rituals from bureaucratic meddling, and a definitive move toward liberating temples from state control to ensure that the wealth and wisdom of the faith are preserved for the faithful alone.
