Amid intensifying hostilities between Israel and Iran, attention has increasingly focused on a highly classified Israeli unmanned aerial vehicle known as the RA-01. Described as a long-range stealth drone designed for intelligence gathering and covert strike missions, the RA-01 is believed to have played a critical role in Israel’s recent aerial campaigns targeting Iranian military infrastructure.
The existence of the RA-01 first surfaced publicly following a leak of U.S. intelligence documents in late October 2024. Since then, reports have linked the platform to multiple high-risk, deep-penetration operations inside Iranian territory. Though Israel has not officially acknowledged operational specifics, reports indicate that the drone has been used for “precise monitoring” of Iranian commanders and senior military leadership.
Unverified footage circulating on social media has purportedly shown the RA-01 operating in daylight over Tehran, an assertion that, if accurate, would underscore its advanced stealth and electronic warfare capabilities.
Designed for deep penetration
The RA-01 is described as a large, flying-wing stealth UAV resembling the U.S.-made RQ-170 Sentinel and the RQ-180. Its blended wing-body design reduces radar cross-section, enabling it to evade sophisticated surface-to-air missile systems.
While initial speculation suggested a jet engine, defence sources now believe the drone may use a turboprop propulsion system. This configuration prioritises endurance and operational range over speed, allowing it to undertake long, circuitous routes to avoid hostile radar networks before approaching targets.
The platform is primarily designed for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions but also carries internal strike capabilities. Its ability to remain undetected while operating in contested airspace has reportedly given Israel unprecedented situational awareness during operations against Iranian ballistic missile sites and air defence installations.
Operational base and strategic role
Satellite imagery and leaked intelligence documents indicate that the RA-01 operates from a high-security section of Ramon Airbase in Israel’s Negev Desert. Infrastructure upgrades linked to the program were reportedly completed by early 2026, suggesting expansion and increased operational tempo.
The drone is believed to have been deployed operationally in late 2024. During regional escalations in 2025, it reportedly assisted in suppressing Iranian air defence systems, enabling other Israeli aircraft to strike high-value targets with reduced risk.
In March 2026, amid the ongoing Israeli offensive reportedly codenamed Operation Epic Fury, the RA-01 has continued to provide real-time intelligence and strike support. It is said to operate alongside Israel’s fifth-generation F-35I Adir fighter jets, targeting ballistic missile infrastructure and air defence systems operated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Precision at stand-off range
A defining feature of the RA-01 is its internal weapons bay, designed to carry a “two-digit quantity” of miniature standoff cruise missiles. Chief among them is the Wind Demon missile developed by Israel Aerospace Industries.
The Wind Demon reportedly has a range exceeding 200 kilometres, with some estimates placing it closer to 500 kilometres. Its circular error probable (CEP) is said to be as precise as one metre, enabling high-accuracy strikes against radar systems, missile batteries, and command centres.
The missile employs terrain-masking flight profiles, hugging valleys and natural contours to avoid radar detection. Low-signature electric propulsion further reduces thermal visibility. Operators can reportedly switch between “fast” and “slow” speed modes, either to maximise surprise or to conduct detailed real-time target assessment through video feeds.
Its modular warhead, estimated at over 20 kilograms can be configured for blast, fragmentation, or penetration effects, depending on mission requirements.
Role in recent operations
The RA-01 was reportedly first used in covert missions against Iran in late October 2024. Its operational prominence expanded significantly during Operation Rising Lion in June 2025.
During that campaign, the drone allegedly flew circuitous routes, including paths over the Caspian Sea to approach Iranian targets from unexpected vectors. It was credited with launching saturation attacks that overwhelmed air defence systems protecting key military and nuclear-related infrastructure in Tehran.
Reports suggest that this ability to appear suddenly over sensitive zones such as the Golan Heights and reportedly even Tehran in daylight has had a documented psychological impact. The perception of an “invisible” platform capable of striking without warning has added a new layer of strategic pressure in the conflict.
Psychological and strategic impact
Beyond its technical specifications, the RA-01 represents a shift in aerial warfare dynamics. Its stealth endurance allows Israel to project power deep into adversarial territory without direct exposure of manned aircraft. By combining ISR capabilities with precision strike options, the drone reduces operational risk while maintaining strategic reach.
Reports state that such platforms blur the line between surveillance and attack, creating uncertainty within enemy command structures. If Iranian air defence operators cannot reliably detect or track the drone, their response timelines shrink dramatically, potentially neutralising high-value systems before they can engage.
While much about the RA-01 remains classified, its reported deployment in successive operations suggests that it has become central to Israel’s long-range strike doctrine. As the Israel-Iran confrontation evolves, the drone’s continued presence over contested skies may shape not only battlefield outcomes but also broader deterrence calculations across West Asia.
For now, the RA-01 remains largely in the shadows both literally and strategically but its growing footprint in regional conflicts signals a new era in stealth drone warfare.
