Two sisters in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh have been arrested on serious charges including rape, forced religious conversion, blackmail, and allegedly running a sex racket by luring economically vulnerable women with promises of employment. Investigators believe the operation may extend beyond Madhya Pradesh, with suspected links to Gujarat and Maharashtra, pointing to a possible interstate network.
The case, currently under probe at Bagh Sewania police station, has sparked intense public debate due to allegations of coercion, systematic exploitation, and organised criminal activity, drawing comparisons in public discourse to themes depicted in the controversial film The Kerala Story.
The accused sisters, identified as Amreen and Afreen, were arrested along with their brother Jamal and associate Chandan Yadav after two women, aged 21 and 32 filed separate FIRs on the night of Feb 22.
Two other accused, Jannat and Yasir alias “Ghee Wala,” are currently absconding. According to investigators, the sisters earlier lived in a slum area of Abbas Nagar but had recently shifted to a luxury residence in Sagar Royal Villas. Police suspect that the move was financed through proceeds from illegal activities.
Officials have seized mobile phones of the accused and are analysing financial transactions, travel history, digital chats and WhatsApp groups to determine the scale of the alleged operation.
Job offers that turned into exploitation
According to police sources quoted in media, the accused allegedly targeted economically vulnerable women by promising domestic jobs with a salary of Rs 10,000 per month, along with accommodation, food and an aspirational “high-profile lifestyle.”
One complainant, a beautician from Mungeli district in Chhattisgarh, stated in her FIR that she was taken to Ahmedabad in December 2025 under the pretext of work. Instead, she alleges she was sexually assaulted by Yasir, a relative of Amreen. She further claimed that Bilal and Chanu assaulted her on separate occasions.
The second complainant, a Bhopal resident who worked as a maid at Amreen’s house, alleged that she was left at a residence in Narayan Nagar, where Chandan Yadav raped her. She stated that she was threatened with death and defamation if she spoke out.
Both victims have alleged that they were taken to parties, pubs and lounges and forced to interact with affluent men. The FIR mentions that they were compelled to consume alcohol and MD drugs. They also alleged that compromising photographs were used to blackmail them when they tried to leave.
Allegations of forced religious conversion
A significant aspect of the case involves allegations of forced religious conversion.
One victim alleged that Chandan Yadav pressured her to convert to Islam, promising marriage into a “good family.” She claimed she converted under coercion, was made to wear a burqa and offer prayers, and was later exploited.
Police are examining these allegations under relevant sections dealing with rape and forced conversion.
Further allegations have surfaced during investigation that Amreen had earlier married a Hindu man in 2016 and allegedly facilitated his conversion, after which he was given the name Ayan. The couple reportedly separated five years ago.
Investigators are also probing claims that at least five individuals were allegedly influenced or pressured to convert, including Chandan Yadav, who is accused of adopting a Muslim identity after coming into close contact with the sisters.
Alleged pattern of FIRs and extortion tactics
During the ongoing probe, police sources revealed another dimension to the case. The accused sisters allegedly adopted a strategy of filing criminal cases in multiple cities against men who had disputes with them or had been in contact with them.
Investigators have found instances where serious charges were registered in Bhopal and Ahmedabad against certain individuals. In some cases, similar matters were reportedly filed in different jurisdictions.
One man who claimed to have been “trapped” by Afreen alleged that he was facing serious charges and was asked to pay Rs 5 lakh for a compromise. Police are verifying these claims and examining whether criminal cases were used as a pressure tactic.
Ahmedabad and mumbai links under scanner
Police say the victims were taken not only to Gujarat but also to Mumbai, where they were introduced to strangers under different pretexts.
Amreen and Chandan were recently produced in court after completion of initial remand and have been sent back on further police remand. Investigators plan to take them to Ahmedabad to verify locations where alleged assaults took place and to trace absconding accused including Yasir, Bilal and Chanu.
Authorities are also examining suspected links to drug trafficking in pubs and lounges.
Social media presence and international travel
Afreen reportedly projected herself as a social media influencer and was active on Instagram, where she had over 6,000 followers. Police are scrutinising her digital footprint.
Passport records reveal that Afreen, Amreen and their mother had travelled to Saudi Arabia for a religious visit. Following the FIR, several relatives are reportedly untraceable, and their Abbas Nagar residence has been locked.
The sisters’ father, a tailor who ran a shop in Kohefiza, reportedly died during the first wave of COVID-19 in 2020.
Organised Interstate Network?
Police officials believe the case may not be isolated. Suspicious WhatsApp groups containing photographs of several young women were found on Amreen’s phone. Investigators suspect that more victims may surface.
Authorities are now examining whether the accused were part of a larger interstate network involving trafficking, coercion, drug abuse and forced religious conversion.
All previously registered cases linked to the accused are being reviewed, and statements of concerned parties are being recorded. Officials maintain that only after a thorough probe will the complete scope of the alleged network become clear.
A formal case has been registered at Bagh Sewania police station under sections pertaining to rape, criminal intimidation, religious coercion and organised exploitation.
Police officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are likely. They have urged any other potential victims to come forward.
As the probe deepens, the disturbing allegations have sparked widespread debate in Madhya Pradesh, raising questions about vulnerability, exploitation and the mechanisms used to trap young women under the guise of opportunity.
