YUVIKA 2026: ISRO launches young scientist program for Class 9 students; Check dates, eligibility and selection process

ISRO’s YUVIKA initiative is more than an academic program. It is a national effort to inspire curiosity, innovation, and problem-solving among India’s youth. By introducing students to cutting-edge space research at an early age, ISRO hopes to create a pipeline of talent that will strengthen the country’s scientific and technological progress

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced the launch of YUVIKA 2026, Young Scientist Program (YUva VIgyani KAryakram). The initiative aims to introduce Class 9 students to the world of space science and technology, nurturing the next generation of innovators and scientists who could one day shape India’s space future. Through YUVIKA, ISRO hopes to identify and train young minds who show an early interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience with real-world space research concepts and to interact with ISRO scientists.

Eligible candidates must be studying in Class 9 as of January 1, 2026, and can apply from any recognised school in India. Students are advised to prepare relevant documents in advance, as selection will be based on both academic and extracurricular achievements.

The official program announcement was made on February 20, 2026, followed by the opening of registrations on February 27, 2026. Interested students can submit their applications until March 31, 2026. The first selection list of shortlisted candidates will be released on April 13, 2026, and the second confirmed list will be published on April 20, 2026. The YUVIKA 2026 training program is scheduled to take place from May 11 to May 22, 2026, across various ISRO centers in India.

The selection process for YUVIKA 2026 is a transparent and merit-based approach, designed to recognize students with strong academic performance and active involvement in science-related activities. A 50 per cent weightage is given to the marks obtained in Class 8 or the last annual examination, while 10 per cent weightage is based on the performance in an online quiz conducted during registration. Participation in science exhibitions and co-curricular activities over the past three years carries a 2 to 10 per cent weightage, depending on whether the event was at the school, district, state, or national level.

In addition, students receive extra marks for achievements in Olympiads, sports competitions, and for being members of organizations such as the Scouts and Guides, NCC, or NSS. To encourage participation from all backgrounds, 15 per cent additional weightage is awarded to students from rural schools located in Panchayat areas. Furthermore, ISRO has ensured that each State and Union Territory will have at least one representative, ensuring equal opportunity and nationwide inclusivity in the selection process.

The YUVIKA 2026 training program will take place at nine premier ISRO centers across India, offering students exposure to advanced laboratories and real project environments.

The participating centers include:

  • Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC)
  • Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR)
  • U. R. Rao Satellite Centre (URSC)
  • Along with other major regional centers involved in satellite and rocket research

During the two-week residential program, participants will engage in lectures, lab visits, practical sessions, and interactive discussions with scientists. The curriculum is designed to give students a foundational understanding of space technology, satellite development, launch vehicles, and space applications in everyday life. ISRO will cover all expenses for students selected under the YUVIKA 2026 program. The organisation will provide study materials and resource kits, along with free accommodation and meals for the entire duration of the training. Additionally, students will receive travel reimbursement for the second AC train fare or the corresponding bus fare upon submission of their original tickets. This thoughtful arrangement ensures that students from all economic and regional backgrounds, including those from remote and rural areas, can participate and benefit equally from the program without any financial burden.

YUVIKA 2026 represents a golden opportunity for India’s Class 9 students to step into the world of space science and witness the wonders of technology firsthand. Since its inception in 2019, YUVIKA has successfully connected thousands of students to India’s space journey, building confidence and ambition among young learners. With YUVIKA 2026, ISRO aims to continue this mission with a stronger emphasis on inclusivity and practical exposure.
