India Takes AI to Space: Agnikul Cosmos and NeevCloud announce orbital data centre

At the AI Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, Agnikul Cosmos and NeevCloud unveiled plans to establish India’s first orbital AI data centre under the ORIOn network. The initiative aims to deploy AI-powered satellite infrastructure to enable real-time data processing in space and strengthen India’s sovereign AI and space capabilities

India is gearing up to enter a new domain of space-based artificial intelligence infrastructure through the joint effort of Agnikul Cosmos and NeevCloud. This new project will set up India’s first orbital AI data center by repurposing rocket upper stages into functional AI processing systems in space. This new development is a move towards the creation of indigenous AI capabilities within India, that can go beyond the boundaries of the earth’s limitations and enhance the self-reliance of India in terms of technology.

Orbital Real-Time Inferencing Network (ORIOn)

The new project named Orbital Real-Time Inferencing Network (ORIOn), is working towards the development of a satellite constellation that will be equipped with AI computing infrastructure. The satellites will continuously observe and process data in real time. Implementing orbital infrastructure enables AI systems to be closer to data sources, reducing latency and improving response time for critical applications.

Agnikul Cosmos will be a key player in this process by offering launch vehicles capable of deploying these payloads into orbit. The launch vehicles offered by Agnikul Cosmos will be responsible for the positioning of the AI-enabled payloads. The AI-enabled payloads will be deployed into orbit and the constellation will act as a network of distributed AI nodes that have the capability of real-time inferencing and data handling.

Space-Based AI Data Centre Infrastructure

The space-based AI data centres will include advanced hardware components, such as GPU-based AI computing chips. AI computing chips can perform complex data processing tasks in space. The space-based AI data centres will also include solar panels capable of harnessing sunlight to power the system. This will enable the system to function continuously without relying on Earth’s energy sources.

By locating data centres in orbit, the system is expected to enable faster processing of data closer to its source, thus avoiding latency that results from transmitting data back to Earth for processing. Such a system can improve efficiency in applications that demand fast analysis and instant decision-making.

Applications in Defence, Maritime and Connectivity

The proposed orbital AI system is expected to enable the operation of various applications, such as defence, maritime surveillance and communication systems. Orbital AI processing can help in real-time surveillance, secure communication and the monitoring of large geographical areas. The system ability to operate with minimal latency and be continuously available can improve functionality in situations where instant data analysis is critical.

The constellation model ensures that there is no interruption in coverage, allowing for continuous monitoring and processing without depending on a single satellite.

Building India AI and Data Sovereignty

NeevCloud has already set up terrestrial AI data centres in Indore and Raipur. These data centres are the starting point for the company’s AI infrastructure development. The shift to orbital AI systems is an extension of these capabilities into space. The aim is to make sure that the country has the capability to store and process data on its own, irrespective of the infrastructure that is currently available on Earth.

This vision of the AI SuperCloud was shared by Vijay Kumar Arumuga Nadar, the Chief AI Officer of NeevCloud, at the Bharat Mandapam AI Expo in New Delhi. This project is a testament to the increasing importance of AI as a foundational technology. The development of orbital AI data centers is in line with the aim of developing indigenous infrastructure that supports the technological needs of the country.

Strategic Significance for Indian Space and AI Ecosystem

This partnership integrates the Indian private space industry with the development of AI infrastructure. Agnikul Cosmos is bringing launch services and NeevCloud is bringing AI computing and data centre capabilities. Both are working to build a new type of space-based computing infrastructure.

The ORIOn network aims to extend AI processing beyond Earth and into space. With the development of space-based AI infrastructure, India is seeking to strengthen its position in technology development and enhance its ability to perform independent data storage and processing.

This new project is a sign of the increasing integration of space technology and artificial intelligence. With the continued development of both space technology and artificial intelligence in India, the implementation of orbital AI infrastructure is a step towards developing long-term technological capabilities that combine space technology with advanced computing.
