Ufa: In a troubling incident on February 7, four Indian students were injured in a knife attack at a university in Ufa, located in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic. The Indian Embassy in Russia confirmed the incident, stating that it is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with Russian authorities. A 15-year-old boy has been detained in connection with the attack.

“The Indian Embassy in Russia has confirmed that four Indian students were injured in an unfortunate attack. The Embassy is coordinating with Russian authorities, and officials from the Consulate of India in Kazan have been dispatched to Ufa to assist the injured students,” the Embassy said on X.

A statement from the Russian Federal Health Ministry reportedly confirmed that the four injured students are receiving medical treatment, with one of them in critical condition.

According to the Russian Interior Ministry, the attack was carried out by a 15-year-old boy armed with a knife. He entered a dormitory at the State Medical University in Ufa and stabbed several individuals, injuring around six people, including two police officers. The attacker was also admitted to a local children’s hospital in serious condition. Authorities in Ufa have launched a high-level investigation into the incident.

“The attacker resisted arrest, during which two police officers were stabbed. He also inflicted bodily harm on himself,” said Maj. Gen. Irina Volk, spokesperson for the Russian Interior Ministry. The All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA) condemned the attack, expressing concern over the safety of Indian medical students in Ufa.

Attacker linked to neo-Nazi group

According to a report by the Republic, citing the Baza Telegram channel, the attacker is reportedly a member of the National Socialism/White Power (NS/WP) group, also known as the Sparrows Crew. This violent neo-Nazi organisation was classified as a terrorist group by the Russian Supreme Court in 2021 and has allegedly been linked to attacks on journalists.

The report also stated that the attacker shouted Holocaust-related slogans during the assault, and a swastika, allegedly drawn in a victim’s blood, was found on a dormitory wall.

Authorities said the attacker did not surrender when police arrived and stabbed two officers while resisting arrest. Maj. Gen. Irina Volk, spokesperson for the Russian Interior Ministry, added that the attacker also inflicted injuries on himself. After being subdued and detained, he was admitted to a children’s hospital in serious condition.
