“CPM chopped off my legs”: MP Sadanandan Master displays artificial limbs, recalls 1994 attack in Parliament

BJP MP Sadanandan Master challenged the Left’s claims on democracy in the Rajya Sabha. Placing his artificial limbs on his desk, he recounted the brutal assault by CPI(M) workers who, acting on their leaders’ directions, attacked him at a public place in Kannur while he was getting off a bus and chopped off both his legs. He told the House that the incident reflected how Communist parties in Kerala have often used violence, not tolerance, while speaking in the name of democracy

“CPM chopped off my legs”: MP Sadanandan Master displays artificial limbs, recalls 31-year-old attack in Parliament

BJP MP Sadanandan Master displays artificial limbs in Rajya Sabha

FacebookTwitterWhatsAppTelegramEmail

“This is my two legs. I was a person with strong two legs, but below the knee, nowadays, I’m using artificial limbs. Why? Because the democracy, every time I’m hearing from the House, democracy, democracy, democracy. But those who are roaring about democracy, they committed an attack upon me 31 years ago.” – During his speech in the Rajya Sabha on 2 February 2026, BJP MP Sadanandan Master spoke about an attack on him by CPI(M) workers. He said the party that talks about democracy and tolerance had cut off his legs thirty-one years ago because of his political beliefs.

His thundering words were met with strong reactions from Left parties in the Opposition. CPI(M) MP John Brittas objected to Sadanandan Master displaying his artificial legs inside Parliament. He raised a point of order, saying House rules do not allow certain objects to be brought in. However, Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan told him that the same rules should also be followed when CPI(M) MPs display placards.

Sadanandan Master moved everyone today through his composed narration, laying bare the false claims of those who project themselves as champions of democracy. At the time of the attack, he was working as the RSS saha karyavah in Kannur district. His decision to join the Sangh reportedly angered the local CPI(M), which then targeted him.

Master concluded with a pointed remark; “I regret I could not stand while making my maiden speech due to torture by CPI-M”.

The attack on BJP MP Sadanandan Master from behind

“In Kerala, CPIM leaders…according to their advice, the workers of CPIM, I was on the way to my home after the marriage of my sister was fixed. After discussing about the marriage of my sister, I was returning to my home, that time, in a bazaar, organised criminals caught me immediately after I get down from the bus. They (CPIM workers) caught my backside and put me down on the road, cut off my two legs. They were shouting Inquilaab Zindabaad. They were shouting about democracy,” added.

#WATCH | “..These are my two legs. When I hear lectures on ‘democracy’ today, I am forced to remember the truth. Thirty-one years ago, these very CPI(M) members attacked me and brutally cut off my legs..”

“Why I show this (artificial limbs) here is we had…you are intolerant…I want to show before the nation. I want to show to the people, I want to show to the members of parliament…what is democracy. You (CPIM) are always telling about democracy, you are always telling about tolerance, you are always telling about humanity but your commitment is based on political violence. Political violence is not good for democracy.”

Highlighting the CPI(M)’s hypocrisy, the Rajya Sabha MP went on to say, “Why I show this (artificial limbs) here is we had…you are intolerant…I want to show before the nation. I want to show to the people, I want to show to the members of parliament…what is democracy. You (CPIM) are always telling about democracy, you are always telling about tolerance, you are always telling about humanity but your commitment is based on political violence. Political violence is not good for democracy.”

BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh took to X to criticise John Brittas MP and the Communists, calling them “intolerant.”

Brittas ….. You are intolerant … You are intolerant … Sri Sadanandan Master touched every heart today by his cool narration of calling bluff of people claiming to be saviours of Democracy . Thousands Pranams to you Sri @SadanandanMash for exposing the Communists . https://t.co/yGw5WcBgPg

What happened in 1994?

On January 25, 1994, a group of CPI(M) goons, armed with deadly weapons, attacked Sadanandan Master, then RSS jilla sahkaryavah, chopping off both his legs in an attempt to kill him. He was returning from his uncle’s house that evening after discussing his sister’s wedding, which was scheduled to take place on February 6. Master was working as a teacher at the government-aided Kuzhikkal Lower Primary School in Perinchery, under the Mattanur municipality. He stood out as a Sangh worker in a Communist area because he came from a Communist family. His father was an active CPI(M) member, and his elder brother was in charge of the party’s student wing at the district level.

CPI(M)’s farewell ceremony for the convicted party workers

In August, the dark episode returned to the spotlight when a farewell ceremony for the convicted assailants was held at the CPI(M) Pazhassi South Local Committee office in Kannur district. Footage released by the media showed party workers shouting slogans in support of the men as they prepared to surrender before the court. Among the attendees was senior CPI(M) leader and former Health Minister KK Shailaja, her presence sparked widespread outrage across Kerala, as the ruling party openly celebrated those found guilty of attempted murder, 30 years after the crime.
