Between January 12, 2026, and January 18, 2026, a series of deeply disturbing incidents unfolded across Bharat and Pakistan, showing a growing pattern of attacks on Hindu communities, religious institutions, and women. These incidents ranged from temple desecrations and forced religious conversions to targeted assaults, abductions, and online provocations, triggering public outrage, police action, and renewed demands for stronger protection of vulnerable communities.

Many of the reported cases occurred in contexts where religious, social, or economic vulnerabilities were deliberately exploited. In India, multiple incidents involved Hindu women and minor girls being lured, harassed, or coerced into religious conversion through deception, inducements, or intimidation. Simultaneously, attacks on temples and sacred symbols sparked protests and heightened communal tensions. In neighbouring Pakistan, Hindu communities continued to face systematic persecution, including mob violence, forced conversions, arson attacks, and the targeting of activists, reflecting long-standing structural discrimination and inadequate legal safeguards for religious minorities.

The pattern also extended to the digital sphere, where derogatory and inflammatory content targeting Hindu deities circulated widely on social media platforms, further aggravating communal fault lines. While authorities across several states registered FIRs, made arrests, and initiated investigations, persistent challenges remain in ensuring accountability and timely justice.

As the voice of the nation for decades, Organiser considers it both a journalistic responsibility and a moral duty to document and report such incidents with accuracy and consistency. The following section details the incidents reported between January 12 and January 18, 2026, as part of this continuing commitment to truth, national conscience, and public awareness.

January 12, 2026

1. Bhopal Shahjahanabad Sexual Assault and Forced Conversion Case

A case related to alleged identity concealment, sexual assault, and religious conversion pressure has been reported from the Shahjahanabad area of Bhopal. According to police, on 10 January, Shahjahanabad police registered a case against Lucky alias Sameer under sections related to rape, blackmail, and the Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Act. The accused has been arrested, and further investigation is ongoing. Police stated that the complainant is a 37-year-old Hindu woman whose husband died in 2015. She lived with her son in the Habibganj area and worked in a private job in Arera Colony. In 2020, she came into contact with the accused, who, according to her complaint, introduced himself as Hindu and developed a friendship with her. After she moved to a rented house in the Idgah Hills area, the accused allegedly visited her residence, sexually assaulted her, and recorded a video. The woman alleged that the video was later used to threaten her and that she was subjected to continued sexual exploitation. She further stated that she became pregnant after being given assurances of marriage and later gave birth to a child. According to the complaint, after the child’s birth, the accused disclosed that he was Muslim and pressured the woman to convert to Islam for marriage. The woman alleged that when she refused, she was physically assaulted and harassed. Following this, she approached Shahjahanabad police and filed a complaint. ACP Anil Vajpayee confirmed the registration of the case and the arrest of the accused.

2. Minor Hindu Girl Raped for 1.5 Years in Moradabad

A shocking case emerged from Moradabad district in Uttar Pradesh, where a 16-year-old Hindu minor girl was forcibly raped for about one-and-a-half years by her Muslim neighbor Zubair Khan. The victim lives with her father (complainant), mother, and two brothers in Thana Majhola area, while Zubair’s house is located right in front of theirs. Zubair and his family members would visit the victim’s home when her father went on duty. Zubair first developed illicit relations with the victim’s mother, then pressured the children to convert by offering lures. Zubair’s mother and four sisters were involved in raping the minor by locking her in a room and making objectionable videos of her. Zubair threatened the girl at gunpoint that she would be killed along with her family and the videos would be viral if she complained, while also luring her with promises of Rs 20 lakh and a house collected through mosque funds. The victim narrated the entire incident to her father, who refused the conversion offer and filed a case against six people, Zubair, the mother, and four other family members. Police arrested Zubair and the victim’s mother, sending them to jail, while searches continue for the other four. The minor stated she wants the strictest punishment and justice, as her mother facilitated all the acts.

3. Garhmukteshwar Dalit Woman Sexual Assault and Blackmail Case

A case of alleged sexual assault by concealing identity has been reported from the Garhmukteshwar Kotwali area of Uttar Pradesh. On the directions of the court, police have registered an FIR against Yunus, a hotel operator, under sections related to rape, criminal intimidation, blackmail, and provisions of the SC/ST Act. Police stated that further investigation is underway. According to the complaint, the victim is a 22-year-old Dalit woman. She stated that about eight months ago, two men came to her house to buy a buffalo and later continued visiting. One of them introduced himself as Ajay Kumar, claiming to be a hotel operator, and gained the trust of the woman and her family. It was alleged that under the pretext of offering her a job at the hotel, the accused took her there, administered an intoxicating substance, sexually assaulted her, and recorded obscene photos and videos. Due to fear of social stigma, the woman initially did not report the incident. The complaint further states that the accused later disclosed that his real name was Yunus and threatened to make the photos and videos public if she did not comply. It is alleged that he repeatedly sexually assaulted her at different locations and mentally harassed her, including the use of caste-based abusive language. Christian pastor had been organising regular prayer gatherings on Sundays and Thursdays in the area for nearly three years. These gatherings primarily involved Hindu villagers from economically vulnerable and Dalit communities. Participants were allegedly assured cures for illnesses, relief from spirit possession, and economic improvement through prayers. Villagers including Roshan Kumar, Santosh Kumar, Vishal Kumar, and Dashrath Ram stated that Christian songs, videos, sermons, religious books, and gifts were used during the programmes, and that Hindu deities were insulted during the gatherings. Local residents objected to the activities and informed the police. Kochas police station SHO Nitish Kumar confirmed that information was received about tents and prayer meetings at the river site, but stated that no prior information regarding religious conversions had been given to the administration.

Severed cattle heads, bones, and skins numbering over one hundred were discovered concealed behind a tin enclosure in a field adjoining a graveyard, located close to the temple. The land where the remains were found was linked to a local man named Mohammad Shakir. The discovery led to tension in the area and public anger among local residents. Police inspection confirmed that the cattle remains had been systematically stored and dumped in the field. The building also housed a Jeevika Library, which is regularly used by students for study. A student who arrived at the library noticed the activities and recorded the video. 7. Former Gujarat Chief Minister’s Statements on Godhra Incident Draw Criticism

In January 2026, former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela made public statements during an interview in which he commented on the 27 February 2002 Godhra incident. He stated that the Sabarmati Express coach carrying kar sevaks was set on fire from inside and described the incident as a political conspiracy intended to create communal polarisation and benefit the BJP. He further said that local Muslims were not aware of the train’s schedule or the presence of kar sevaks and suggested the fire was ignited by insiders to provoke Hindu–Muslim enmity. The Godhra incident of 27 February 2002 resulted in the deaths of 59 Hindu kar sevaks, including women and children, who were returning from Ayodhya. Multiple investigations and judicial proceedings over the years, including findings upheld by the Supreme Court of India, concluded that the attack was premeditated. Court records established that stones and inflammable material had been collected in advance, the train coaches were locked from the outside, and the coach was set on fire. Several individuals, including Farooq Bhana, Imran Sheru, Yakub Pataliya and Rafik Bhatuk, were convicted for their roles in the incident. Vaghela’s remarks drew criticism as they contradicted the conclusions reached by investigative agencies and courts after prolonged legal scrutiny. The statements were widely circulated and viewed as downplaying the findings related to the Godhra incident, which has been legally adjudicated over more than two decades.

The incident sparked outrage among local Hindu residents and organisations, who gathered at Thakurganj police station demanding swift action. Police responded promptly, arrested Abhishek Gautam, and launched a thorough investigation into the attack. Eyewitnesses confirmed the deliberate nature of the act, noting that the accused systematically destroyed the Shivalinga, a central symbol of worship in the temple. Authorities continue to investigate, and the case remains under judicial review.

Hyderabad, Telangana – A Hindu temple in the Puranapool Darwaza area was targeted on 14 January 2026, when an unidentified miscreant partially damaged a Plaster of Paris idol of the deity Mysamma and a flexi banner displayed in the temple veranda. The incident sparked tensions in the locality, leading to clashes at a nearby Sufi shrine and confrontations with police. The Kamatipura Police acted swiftly, registering two FIRs and collecting CCTV footage from the temple. Authorities confirmed that the main idols inside the sanctum sanctorum were unharmed. Investigations are ongoing, and police indicated that an arrest was expected soon. Additional forces, including Rapid Action Force personnel, were deployed to maintain order. Political leaders and local organisations condemned the attack. Telangana BJP President N. Ramchander Rao described it as part of a disturbing pattern of temple desecrations in the state. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Asaduddin Owaisi visited the site and coordinated with police officials. The deliberate damage to the idol and banner struck at the spiritual and cultural heart of the temple, deeply affecting the Hindu community in Hyderabad. Authorities assured the public that the situation is under control and warned against spreading unverified information.

The victims, identified as Bijli Upadhyay, Sania Upadhyay, Bijli Sharma, Paro Prajapati, Sumo Banavansi, Nisha, and Khushboo Maurya, approached the Suriyawan police station on 14 January 2026 to file a complaint. According to police, the victims stated that they followed Sanatan Hindu traditions and that Manju Devi was pressuring them to abandon Hinduism and convert. Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Manglik ordered a Circle Officer-level investigation into the matter and assured that strict legal action would follow if forced conversion was confirmed. A local transgender organisation, Ardhanarishwar, warned of district-level protests if the victims did not receive justice. Police are gathering evidence and examining CCTV footage and statements to take action in accordance with the law. The victims’ complaints highlighted that the coercive tactics aimed to strip them of their religious identity, constituting targeted harassment and a violation of constitutional rights. The incident has been recorded as a case of predatory proselytisation and religiously motivated hate crime.

45. Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir: Hindus Threatened as Terror Commander Calls for Mass Killings

Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir – Abu Musa Kashmiri, a senior commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), issued a public call for mass violence against Hindus during a rally near the Line of Control in Tatrinote, Hajira Tehsil, Rawalakot district. The speech, circulated widely on social media on 14 January 2026, called for “slitting the throats of Hindus” and described jihad and terrorism as the only means to achieve freedom in Kashmir. Security sources noted that the speech follows a pattern of faith-targeted extremism, similar to rhetoric delivered by Kashmiri ahead of the Pahalgam attack on 22 April 2025, when several Hindus were killed after being identified by their religion. The speech coincided with a gathering in Bahawalpur, a Jaish-e-Mohammed stronghold, where senior LeT commanders were seen regrouping. Indian security officials have been monitoring militant propaganda and movements along the LOC. The speech comes shortly after Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi reaffirmed that any terrorist activity from across the border would be met with a firm response, citing Operation Sindoor in May 2025 as an example of India’s swift counter-terror capabilities. Abu Musa Kashmiri’s remarks were explicitly directed at Hindus as a religious community and called for genocidal violence, marking the incident as hate speech with violent threats and a call for faith-based mass killings. The targeted nature, public delivery, and historical context underscore the communal intent behind the statements.

46. Minor Hindu Girl Abducted, Forcibly Converted, and Married in Mirpur Khas, Sindh

Mirpur Khas, Sindh – A minor Hindu girl, Maria, daughter of Shamon Bheel from Village Usman Shah Hadi, Tando Allahyar, was abducted and forcibly converted to Islam by a Muslim man, Naeem Memon Rajput, who subsequently married her. Following the conversion, Maria was renamed Naila Sheikh. The incident, reported on 14 January 2026, violated Sindh’s child protection and minority protection laws. Maria’s family stated the abduction, conversion, and marriage were carried out without her consent, prompting them to approach authorities for justice. Two FIRs were lodged, and local sources confirmed ongoing investigations. The case reflects a broader pattern in Sindh, where minority Hindu girls have frequently been abducted, forcibly converted, and married to Muslim men, with previous incidents recorded in Umerkot, Mirpur Khas, and Hyderabad in 2025. These acts, often targeting minors, exploit vulnerabilities and violate both human rights and child protection norms. Maria’s abduction and forced conversion highlight systemic discrimination and religiously motivated persecution against Hindus in Pakistan. The targeting of her faith, identity, and autonomy classifies the incident as a hate crime under predatory proselytisation and coercive conversion.
