MORADABAD: Police have registered a case against five Muslim girls under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021, following allegations that they coerced a classmate into wearing a burqa and converting to Islam. The FIR was lodged at Bilari Police Station based on a complaint filed by the victim’s brother, Devesh Chaudhary.

According to the complaint, the accused and the victim were attending the same tuition classes. The complainant alleged that the five girls, all belonging to the Muslim community, repeatedly pressured his sister to adopt Islamic attire and religious practices. He further claimed that the girl was mentally harassed and urged to change her religion against her will.

Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR under Sections 3 and 5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, which deals with forced, fraudulent, or coercive religious conversions. Under the law, those found guilty can face imprisonment ranging from five to fourteen years, depending on the nature of the offence and the victim’s vulnerability.

The Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, enacted in 2021, aims to prevent conversions carried out through force, misrepresentation, undue influence, or coercion. Authorities have reiterated that the law is meant to protect individual freedom of choice while ensuring that no one is compelled to change their religion under pressure.
