Thiruvananthapuram: The SNDP Yogam Council has approved unity with the Nair Service Society (NSS), assigning Thushar Vellappally, vice president of the SNDP, to hold further discussions to advance the initiative. SNDP Yogam President Vellappally Natesan said the proposal for unity originated from the NSS leadership and that the council had taken up the issue with deep emotional commitment. He expressed confidence that SNDP and NSS would never clash again and stressed that all future decisions would be taken only after consultation and discussion with NSS President Sukumaran Nair.
Vellappally Natesan clarified that SNDP harbours no animosity towards any community. He said that his earlier remarks about the Muslim League had been misinterpreted as hostility towards the Muslim community. “It is not the style of SNDP to criticise any community,” he said, adding that the organisation believes in moving forward in harmony with all sections of society. According to him, SNDP has always stood for social cohesion and inter-community understanding. He further stated that what had been exposed was only the discrimination shown during the League’s rule. “What is happening now is the League’s attempt to distort the issue and convert it into religious hatred without addressing the substance of the criticism,” he said. Both organisations discussed the matter openly and adopted the resolution after detailed deliberations, Vellappally Natesan added.
Recalling the origins of the unity initiative, he said it was the NSS leadership that first sounded the call for unity when problems arose due to the League’s stand. He expressed gratitude to NSS President Sukumaran Nair for taking the lead at that critical moment. Emphasising the relevance of unity in the present era. Vellappally Natesan informed that Thushar Vellappally would hold further talks on the question of unity. He underlined that there were no preconditions for unity and said that people ranging from the Nayadi (Dalits) community to the Nasrani (Christian ) community, who believe in social justice, would come together on this platform.
Meanwhile, the SNDP leadership meeting also passed a resolution against the Muslim League. The resolution said that Malappuram district is not anyone’s private empire and alleged that the League was securing benefits for itself in the name of religion. It stated that the League’s commitment to secularism appears only during election periods and accused it of governing solely on religious considerations in violation of the Constitution. The resolution also warned that the organisation would respond strongly to what it described as secular hypocrisy and political drama. The leadership meeting announced its full support for Vellappally Natesan’s struggle for social justice and reaffirmed its commitment to building unity across communities while resisting communal and divisive politics.
NSS welcomes SNDP council decision
Nair Service Society (NSS) General Secretary G. Sukumaran Nair said the NSS warmly welcomes the decision taken by the SNDP Yogam Council and described unity between the two organisations as the need of the hour. He said an SNDP representative would be welcomed at Perunna and noted that both SNDP and NSS, as dominant community organisations, have a special responsibility to safeguard social harmony. Emphasising that elections are not an issue for NSS, he said the organisation follows a policy of equal distance in electoral politics, which is one of its basic values, and that its disagreements are firm on core principles rather than political expediency.
He clarified that there is no need for NSS to promote Congress opposition leader V.D. Satheesan and dismissed attempts by Congress leaders to exaggerate the issue. “Satheesan is not a big deal. This is a matter between SNDP and NSS,” he said. He added that NSS has no desire for ministerial positions or parliamentary ambitions. “We do not want a minister, we do not have any parliamentary ambitions. We have only asked for what we deserve,” he said. Welcoming further dialogue, Sukumaran Nair said that if Thushar Vellappally arrives, he will be received like a son or a brother. He informed that the NSS Board of Directors would convene a meeting after the arrival of the SNDP leadership to take the talks forward. He made it clear that Thushar is not viewed as a political leader by NSS and that the organisation’s political stance remains unchanged.
