Between 2021 and early 2026, a series of deeply disturbing incidents involving the desecration of Hindu places of worship has come to light, raising significant concerns regarding communal harmony and the protection of religious sanctity. This report examines 19 documented cases across various states and even international borders where sacred premises were targeted through acts of public urination, defecation, and obscene conduct. These acts, often recorded and circulated on social media, transcend mere vandalism; they represent a deliberate attempt to insult the core tenets of the Hindu faith and provoke emotional distress within the community. The frequency and nature of these occurrences have prompted a nationwide dialogue on the need for enhanced security around temples and a more rigorous legal framework to deter such sacrilegious behaviour.

In recent years, there has been a deeply concerning rise in reports regarding the desecration of Hindu places of worship through highly offensive acts, including urination, defecation, and other lewd conduct within Mandir premises. Such incidents, often allegedly perpetrated by radicalised individuals or religious extremists, are not merely acts of vandalism but are perceived as targeted strikes against the sanctity of the Hindu faith and the cultural dignity of the community. These provocations have sparked widespread outrage across the country, leading to urgent demands for stricter security measures around religious sites and more stringent legal action against those attempting to disturb communal harmony through such sacrilegious behaviour.

This report is based on 19 major incidents occurring between 2021 and 2026 involving the desecration of Hindu temples through acts of defecation, urination, and lewd behaviour by religious extremists.

The recurring nature of these incidents underscores a persistent challenge in maintaining the dignity of religious spaces in a diverse society. While law enforcement agencies have acted swiftly in many of these 19 cases – employing sections of the penal code to arrest and prosecute offenders – the social impact of such provocations remains profound. The data suggests that these acts are often calculated to disturb public peace, necessitating not just legal intervention but a broader societal commitment to mutual respect. Moving forward, the implementation of advanced surveillance at sensitive religious sites and the consistent application of stringent judicial penalties are essential to ensuring that the sanctity of places of worship is preserved and that those who seek to incite discord through such vile acts are held fully accountable.
