Tamil Nadu BJP Youth Wing chief SG Suryah attacked after TV debate, alleges DMK goons’ handiwork

BJP Tamil Nadu Youth Wing President SG Suryah has alleged a planned and violent assault by DMK cadres after a televised debate in Chennai, raising serious questions over law and order and freedom of expression in the state

In yet another worsening law and order situation and an attempt at stifling the democratic voices of the opposition, BJP Tamil Nadu Youth Wing President Dr. SG Suryah was allegedly heckled and attacked by a frenzied mob of DMK cadres, led by a person claiming to be a journalist and speaker.

Suryah has strongly condemned the alleged assault on him and BJP Youth Wing members at a private television channel office in Chennai, accusing DMK cadres of resorting to violence after being unable to counter arguments during a televised debate.

Taking to his social media platform X, Suryah recalled that the incident took place at a private television studio in Egmore immediately after the conclusion of the debate. He alleged that the attack occurred in the presence of DMK Member of Parliament Thanga Tamilselvan and police personnel, which he described as a serious breakdown of law and order.

In his post, Suryah said: “Unable to counter arguments with arguments, the #DMK has resorted to violence during a television debate. I strongly condemn this murderous assault unleashed by DMK’s goons on me and my Youth Wing brothers who stepped in to protect me. This marks the absolute nadir of law and order.

“The attempted attack took place at a private television channel’s office in Egmore, immediately after the debate, right in the presence of MP (Theni) Thiru @ThangaTamilselvan and the police. It is shocking that the goons openly told the police, ‘We are cutting the power for 10 minutes, you leave, we will take care of it,’ before launching the attack. Exactly as threatened, the power was disconnected for 10 minutes, and this violence was orchestrated according to plan.”

Suryah further said: “This attack, executed with the complete complicity of the police, is a war waged against Freedom of Expression. DMK’s trend of practising politics by unleashing goons is a threat to democracy. This incompetent government must answer for the bloodshed of our injured Youth Wing members.”

He added that he and more than 20 BJP Youth Wing office-bearers who attempted to protect him were subjected to what he termed a “murderous assault” by DMK-linked individuals. He demanded accountability from the DMK government for the injuries sustained by BJP Youth Wing members, stating that the government must answer for the bloodshed caused in the attack.

Reacting to the incident, BJP Tamil Nadu President K Annamalai said: “When reason prevails, DMK’s only response is violence. As BJYM State President @SuryahSG avl firmly cornered the DMK with facts during a debate hosted by @News18TamilNadu, hundreds of DMK goons armed with deadly weapons and soda bottles stormed the venue to attack him and our BJYM karyakarthas.

“Shockingly, the lights were deliberately switched off to aid the attackers. This is the grim and lawless atmosphere prevailing in Tamil Nadu under the DMK regime, where instead of arresting the perpetrators, the police machinery works overtime to shield DMK goons. This is a chilling reminder of the DMK’s dark old days in the age of no social media, when dissent was silenced by force and fear ruled the streets.”

Netizen Sanghi Prince, in a post on X, quoted an alleged speech by Senthil, stating: “Sekar Babu’s ‘people’ are gathered here for me. We are waiting for the BJP guys to come out of the debate show, and when they come out, we will teach them a lesson for opposing us during the debate,” says @Senthilvel79 before allegedly attempting to kill BJP karyakartas with his goons.

“Confession of attempt to murder caught on camera, yet no news about the arrest of these attackers. Saaar… law and order saar. DMK govt saar, No. 1 in the world saar.”

Lok Sabha MP Tejasvi Surya said: “Strongly condemn the attack by DMK goons on @BJYMinTN President @SuryahSG and 20+ Youth Wing karyakartas today. This shocking incident exposes the complete breakdown of law and order in the state. The DMK’s politics of intimidation poses a serious threat to democracy in Tamil Nadu. @BJYM will not be intimidated. Critics said Tamil Nadu is unsafe for journalists, opposition leaders, social media activists, common men, children, and women, describing the state as descending into anarchy. They alleged that the government is only concerned with appeasing minorities at the cost of the majority and stifling democratic voices through intimidation. Critics further claimed that those critical of the government or the DMK’s first family are arrested like terrorists, and warned that without strong intervention, Tamil Nadu could witness a West Bengal–like situation ahead of the 2026 elections.
