KARWAR: A horrific incident in Yellapur town of Uttara Kannada district, where a woman was brutally murdered for refusing to marry her former partner, has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over violence against women and the misuse of emotional relationships to exert control.
The victim, identified as Ranjitha, a resident of Yellapur, was allegedly stabbed to death by a man named Mohammed Rafiq, who later fled the scene. Police said the crime took place on Saturday under the jurisdiction of the Yellapur police station. The accused is currently absconding, and special teams have been formed to track him down.
According to police and local sources, Ranjitha had been divorced nearly ten years ago and was raising a child. She lived with her parents and elder brother in Yellapur and was employed as a midday meal helper at a government school. Known in the locality as a quiet and hardworking woman, her death has left the community in shock.
Relationship turned fatal
Investigators said Ranjitha and Rafiq became friends a few months after her divorce, and the relationship gradually developed into a romantic one. Locals stated that both families were on cordial terms, and Rafiq frequently visited Ranjitha’s home, often sharing meals with her family. There was reportedly no indication of hostility until recent months.
However, the situation took a dark turn when Rafiq allegedly began pressuring Ranjitha to marry him. Sources said Ranjitha made her position clear on multiple occasions, stating that she did not wish to remarry after her earlier experience. She reportedly told Rafiq that while she wanted to maintain the relationship, marriage was not something she was willing to consider.
Despite her clear refusal, the accused allegedly continued to harass and pressure her, leading to frequent arguments.
Attack in public view
On Saturday, when Ranjitha was returning home after work, Rafiq allegedly intercepted her in the middle of the road and once again confronted her about marriage. When she firmly refused, an argument broke out. In a fit of rage, the accused allegedly attacked her with a knife in public view and fled the spot immediately after the assault.
Ranjitha sustained grievous injuries and collapsed on the road. Passersby rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries despite medical efforts.
Police have registered a murder case and launched a manhunt for the accused. Officials said preliminary investigation indicates that the crime was premeditated and driven by the accused’s inability to accept the woman’s decision.
Widespread condemnation
The brutal killing has drawn sharp criticism from women’s rights groups, civil society activists and local residents, who condemned the act as a stark example of entitlement-driven violence. Activists said the incident reflects a disturbing mindset where a woman’s autonomy and consent are disregarded, and rejection is met with extreme brutality.
“This is not a crime of passion; it is a crime of control,” a women’s rights activist said. “A woman clearly said no to marriage. That should have been respected. Instead, she was punished with death. This shows how dangerous it is when men believe they have ownership over women’s choices.”
Residents of Yellapur also expressed anger and fear following the incident, calling for swift justice and stronger preventive measures. Many questioned how repeated harassment escalated into murder and stressed the need for early intervention in cases involving threats and coercion.
