Tamil Nadu: Migrant worker from West Bengal beaten to death near Coimbatore days after Odisha man was brutally attacked

The murder of a West Bengal migrant worker near Coimbatore, coming days after a brutal assault on an Odisha man in Tiruttani, has triggered sharp political reactions and public outrage, with critics alleging a breakdown of law and order and rising hostility towards guest workers in the state

Even before the news of the brutal attack on an Odisha man subsided, Coimbatore Bazaar Police on 29 December arrested two men for the murder of a Midnapore (West Bengal) native, R Suraj, near Ukkadam. The migrant worker was employed at an eatery. The accused have been identified as A Bajith Khan, an auto driver who also serves as a home guard, and his friend R Prakash.

On 28 December, Bajith Khan allegedly drove his auto rashly, following which Suraj questioned him. An altercation ensued, allegedly leading to Suraj’s death.

Earlier, on Saturday (27 December), an Odisha man was brutally attacked by four youths, all aged 17, allegedly for looking askance at them over their peculiar hairstyles. The attackers were reportedly intoxicated and were seen flashing a machete.

The victim was allegedly forced to alight at Tiruttani and assaulted severely, resulting in serious injuries. Images circulating on social media indicate the magnitude of the injuries sustained.

Critics point out that while the state government announced ₹10 lakh compensation for illicit hooch tragedy victims, no such announcement was made in these cases. They allege this reflects systemic hostility towards North Indians, particularly migrant workers. Leaders of the ruling DMK have frequently been accused of making disparaging remarks against them.

A netizen wrote on X: “Pullingo is not a TN-specific problem. North India calls it Dehat/Chapri, Japan brands it Yankii, Italy terms it Teppisti, Britain calls it Yobs, and the US calls them street toughs. Every society has to deal with offenders who cause social disorder or harm.”

W0kes would judge and shame parents/teachers/society for attempting to discipline a Pullingo, but would not judge or shame Pullingos themselves!

Another post stated: “DMK, M. K. Stalin, and Udhayanidhi Stalin and their ecosystem have reduced Tamil Nadu into a hate-mongering and violent state. Without North Indian brothers, Tamil Nadu would come to a standstill. Hatred is being relentlessly spewed from DMK stages and DMK-backed cinema and YouTube channels.”

Responding to the Tiruttani incident, police officials said the assault stemmed from a dispute after the victim questioned the youths for staring at him, adding that it was “not entirely due to his being from North India”. The statement was made by IG of Police (North Zone) Asra Garg and Tiruvallur SP Vivekanand Shukla.

A second incident in #Tiruttani within a week has also been reported, allegedly involving drug influence and an attack on an elderly man.

Condemning the incidents, Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran stated on X: “Attacks on guest workers are increasing under the DMK regime… This is very shocking.”

Making a scathing attack, former TN BJP president K. Annamalai said that violence in Tamil Nadu was no longer isolated but had become a disturbing pattern under DMK rule.

The wounds from the brutal attack on Suraj have not yet healed, and even before the conscience of the state could recover, Thiruttani witnessed yet another act of senseless violence yesterday. A local businessman, Jamal, was attacked by a group without provocation or cause.

Actor Joseph Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, also condemned the Tiruvallur incident, alleging media silence.

Several videos circulating on social media depict police personnel being chased, abused, and assaulted by drunken youths.

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram called for a statewide “show of force” operation by police.

Meanwhile, Narcotics Control Bureau Chennai zone reportedly seized 2,362 kg of narcotics and arrested 46 persons this year. Social media has since seen the emergence of “Drug-free, DMK-free” posters.

Critics further allege that inflammatory remarks by leaders of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and others have emboldened antisocial elements, while Tamil Nadu has allegedly turned into a narcotics-free zone only in official claims, not on the ground.
