DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand government has launched an aggressive statewide crackdown against fraudsters and imposters exploiting religion and faith, leading to the arrest of 511 people, including 19 Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the state. The action comes under ‘Operation Kalnemi’, a campaign personally overseen by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, aimed at safeguarding the cultural, spiritual, and social fabric of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand.

Launched in July 2025, Operation Kalnemi takes its name from Kalnemi, a demon from Hindu belief who disguised himself as a sant to deceive people. Officials say the symbolism reflects the government’s resolve to expose those who misuse religious identity and public faith for fraud, criminal activity, or personal gain.

According to official data released on December 26, authorities have verified over 4,800 individuals across Haridwar, Dehradun, and Udham Singh Nagar, districts considered highly sensitive due to religious tourism, migration, and urban expansion.

  • Haridwar witnessed the largest operation, with more than 3,000 people verified, resulting in 715 cases and 305 arrests.
  • In Dehradun, officials verified 1,711 individuals, leading to 206 arrests and preventive action against 380 people.
  • In Udham Singh Nagar, 220 suspicious individuals were identified, with cases registered in serious matters.

At the state level, the campaign has so far led to the registration of 724 cases, underlining the scale and intensity of the operation.

A major focus of the drive has been the identification of foreign nationals residing illegally. Among those arrested are 19 Bangladeshi citizens, whose presence has raised serious concerns about border security and illegal migration.

Officials confirmed that 10 of the Bangladeshi nationals have already been deported, while legal proceedings are underway against the remaining nine. The government has made it clear that zero tolerance will be shown toward illegal foreign residents found violating Indian law.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has categorically stated that Operation Kalnemi is not targeted at any particular community, but is strictly focused on maintaining law and order and protecting the dignity of Uttarakhand as a land of faith.

“Faith will always be respected, but crime, hypocrisy, and fraud under its guise will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” CM Dhami said, adding that Uttarakhand is not just a geographical entity but a spiritual centre for millions of devotees across the country and the world.

He has directed district administrations and police officials to remain on high alert and ensure that no negligence is allowed in enforcing the drive.

The Uttarakhand government has described Operation Kalnemi as one of its most decisive actions to protect the identity of Devbhoomi and to prevent exploitation of religious sentiments. Officials say the operation will continue with full force in the coming months, with expanded verification and stricter action against offenders.
