Indian space program has achieved another milestone in December 2025 that has increased interest in the Gaganyaan Mission, which is on course to become a reality. ISRO has successfully completed the qualification testing of the drogue parachutes of the Crew Module of the Gaganyaan Mission at the Rail Track Rocket Sled facility of the TBRL in Chandigarh on December 18 & 19 of 2025.

What is the importance of parachute testing?

The landing of the parachute is among the most critical phases of human space missions because it determines the astronaut level of safety. While satellites would need to land from hypersonic speeds, a human spacecraft has to undertake this journey successfully for a soft landing in the ocean. The recent tests represent the progress that India is making towards the translation of designs into practical accomplishments necessary for conducting a human space mission.

Deceleration System Structure and Drogue Parachutes assistant

In the Gaganyaan Crew Module the deceleration system consists of ten parachutes, which is classified into different categories. First, there are the apex cover separation parachutes, which separate the cover of the parachute compartment. This is followed by the drogue parachutes, whose objective is to provide stability to the module while decelerating the fall velocity. Last is where the pilot parachutes separate the main parachutes, which causes the splashdown at a safe velocity.

The parachutes tested in the Chandigarh facility, which is important because it help in the steady stabilization of the Crew Module when extreme forces of re-entry act upon it. The parachutes have to endure extreme heat, pressurized conditions, fluctuations in the rate of rotation and dynamic winds.

The two RTRS campaigns were conducted on December 18 and 19, 2025, to simulate severe aerodynamic and mechanical loading conditions. As ISRO explains the drogue parachutes performed well in meeting all the required performance parameters, thereby validating the stability and strength of the parachutes despite the drastic variation in the operating conditions.

Earlier Preparations for Gaganyaan Parachute Tests

Chandigarh has achieved success in line with its previous achievements. In 2023 ISRO has undergone parachute drop tests for analysing inflation characteristics. In 2024 work was done on strength enhancements and joint qualification tests in coordination with DRDO laboratories. Multiple test flights have been conducted in previous years, such as TV-D1 and TV-D2, these flights have tested patterns for emergency crew escape systems, which reveals crucial information related to safety. It further reveals gradual and continuous work being done in Indian human space program.

Multi-Agency Collaboration

This latest achievement makes excellent coordination among the institutions. VSSC, ISRO, ADRDE and TBRL scientists collaborated to jointly verify the performance criteria. Gaganyaan has developed into a collective nationwide effort involving the military and civil research skills to provide mission architecture safe for human use.

ISRO is still emphasising the importance of being cautious, data-oriented and waiting for outcomes. This is another step closer to achieving their dream of sending their own astronauts on their own spacecraft. When Gaganyaan will become operational, it will make India as one among the few countries that possess their own spaceflight capability. This test in December is another step closer towards the success of Gaganyaan mission.
