Hailing from Darbhanga, Saraogi donned many roles while being working with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (AVBP) during his student life. He also served in the district body of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

Saraogi entered electoral politics in the year 2002, and was elected as an MLA from Darbhanga in February 2005, a seat he contested and won in consecutive elections held in October 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025.

In the 2025 state assembly elections, Saraogi was up against Vikasheel Insaan Party’s (VIP) candidate Umesh Sahni to whom he defeated by a margin of over 24k votes. He also has served as Bihar Minister of Revenue and Land Reforms in the NDA government.

Several leaders of the state BJP unit and NDA congratulated Saraogi upon his appointment as the state BJP chief.

Taking to X, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar wrote “Hearties congratulations and best wishes to Shri Sanjay Saraogi Ji on being appointed as the BJP state president. Shri Sanjay Saraogi Ji has also worked with us as a ministerial colleague in the cabinet. He has been elected as an MLA for the fifth time. Hearties best wishes to him for this new responsibility”.
