Karnataka: Hindus protest against alleged illegal Mosque construction at Sadiq Nagar in Chitradurga

A mosque under construction in Chitradurga’s Sadiq Nagar has triggered a major dispute, with locals alleging it is illegal while the Muslims insist all approvals are in place. The issue has escalated into a political and communal flashpoint as authorities launch an inquiry into procedural lapses

Tensions have escalated in Chitradurga following the construction of a mosque in Sadiq Nagar Layout, which has sparked widespread controversy. Allegations have surfaced that the mosque is being erected illegally, without proper permission and against zoning rules. However, the local Muslim community claims the construction is fully legal and approved, creating a sharp divide among residents.

The dispute centres around the 35th ward of Sadiq Nagar, where approximately 500 Hindu families reside alongside about 30 Muslim households. The area already has one mosque, but the ongoing construction of another structure near the main road has ignited objections. Residents and Hindu organisations argue that the new mosque violates municipal norms and was initiated without transparency. Complaints have been filed with the municipal council, the Chitradurga Urban Development Authority, and the district administration, but no decisive action has been taken so far.

Local Hindu residents allege that the new mosque project is being pushed forward using influence and intimidation. They claim efforts are underway to alter the locality’s identity and disrupt traditional Hindu festivals. They also accuse political groups of enabling the construction to appease vote banks.

On the other hand, local Muslim leader Abdul has strongly refuted these claims. He maintains that the mosque is being built as per official permissions and that the allegations are politically motivated attempts to create tension between communities. According to him, all required approvals were obtained legally.

Adding fuel to the fire, Sri Ram Sena founder-president Pramod Muthalik visited Chitradurga and held a press conference, voicing strong opposition. He criticised the alleged unauthorised construction and accused the Congress government of indulging in appeasement politics. “If Congress loves vote banks so much, let them build a mosque in their own house,” he said, issuing a stern warning that his organisation will not tolerate what he described as “illegal religious expansion.”

Meanwhile, Municipal Commissioner Lakshmi revealed that the previous commissioner had granted permission for the mosque without issuing a mandatory public notice. She assured that an inquiry would be conducted to verify procedural lapses and determine whether the construction should proceed or be halted.
