Maharashtra: Over 100 suspected illegal Bangladeshis detained in massive Kharghar crackdown at Hyde Park Society

The local police on November 26 detained more than 100 Bangladeshis during an operation at Hyde Park Society in Sector 35, Navi Mumbai. The action, based on intelligence inputs and preliminary document scrutiny, targeted suspected illegal residents allegedly posing as domestic workers in the upscale residential complex.

According to police officials, the operation began around 10:30 am, when a sizeable team of officers arrived at the society and initiated identity verification of domestic helpers and other support staff employed by residents. The exercise quickly intensified as officers reportedly encountered multiple instances of suspicious or unverifiable documentation.

A resident of the society, speaking strictly on the condition of anonymity, said, “Between 10:30 and 11 am, police teams entered the premises and began questioning women working as domestic help. After the initial checking, many were taken to the police station for detailed investigation.”

Police sources revealed that a significant portion of the detained Bangladeshis over 70 of them women were unable to produce valid visas, passports, or any other official documents proving their legal status in India. Officers also found that many of the Aadhaar cards presented appeared questionable, with several reportedly flagged for potential inconsistencies during verification.

Authorities are currently examining whether these documents were forged or fraudulently acquired. Investigators are also probing the individuals’ purpose for residing in the region, their sources of employment, and whether any organized network may have facilitated their movement or settlement.

Before the police action, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya shared on social media platform X that Hyde Park Society reportedly employed over 100 suspected Bangladeshi nationals as domestic workers. Somaiya stated that he had requested both the police and the Panvel Municipal Corporation to examine the authenticity of the workers’ documents. These claims, however, remain his allegations and have not been officially validated by law enforcement.

Following the verification drive inside the society, several individuals were taken into custody and transported to Kharghar Police Station, where they are now undergoing extensive interrogation. Officials emphasised that the operation is ongoing and that the final count of detained persons may be updated as the investigation expands.

A senior police officer confirmed that the crackdown reflects an increasingly strict watch on suspected illegal residents across Navi Mumbai, especially in rapidly growing residential zones where demand for domestic labour is high.
