Maharashtra: After Al-Falah, Kirit Somaiya flags massive FCRA & land grab scam at Jamia Islamia Ishaatul Uloom

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has alleged large-scale FCRA violations, illegal land grab and inflated student records at Jamia Islamia Ishaatul Uloom in Maharashtra’s Akkalkuwa, following the scrutiny that began after the Al-Falah blast case

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has levelled a series of explosive allegations against the Jamia Islamia Ishaatul Uloom institution and its associated As-Salam Unani Hospital & Medical College in Maharashtra’s tribal-dominated Akkalkuwa region, claiming large-scale FCRA violations, suspected land encroachment, inflated hospital records, and irregular student admissions linked to multiple northern states.

Somaiya, who visited Akkalkuwa and Nandurbar on November 18, said he met the District Collector, Superintendent of Police, and District Health Officer as part of his inquiry. His visit followed heightened scrutiny in the backdrop of the Delhi Al-Falah Hospital blast investigation, which has triggered political and administrative attention toward institutions with alleged regulatory violations.

According to Somaiya, the Union Government has cancelled the FCRA licence of Jamia Islamia Ishaatul Uloom for alleged foreign funding irregularities. The institution reportedly hosts over 12,000 madrasa students, with a significant portion originating from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.

Somaiya cited internal records showing a dramatic surge in enrolments:

  • 2021–22: 5,708 students (2,510 from Bihar)
  • 2025–26: 11,108 students, nearly 90 per cent from outside Maharashtra
  • Bihar alone: 6,553 students (around 3,000 reportedly from Purnea, Araria and Supaul districts)

He questioned the purpose and scale of these admissions, alleging they were linked to “unregulated religious education pipelines.”

Somaiya further claimed the As-Salam Unani Hospital & Medical College was showing “fake or inflated patient figures” to obtain approvals and benefits. He alleged that tribal land in Akkalkuwa had been “grabbed” under the guise of expansion. “These irregularities mirror the Al-Falah pattern,” Somaiya said, drawing parallels to the earlier Delhi case.

The BJP leader urged Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to expedite action in FIR No. 30, registered at Akkalkuva Police Station, which reportedly includes allegations of:

  • Allowing foreign nationals to stay illegally
  • Possible involvement in anti-national activities
  • Misuse of institutional infrastructure

Somaiya called for immediate state intervention, saying the matter requires “top-priority investigation and swift prosecution.” District authorities in Nandurbar confirmed that meetings with Somaiya took place and that relevant documents have been forwarded for review.

Officials said preliminary checks have begun but emphasized that all allegations remain under investigation and no final conclusions have been drawn.
