Love Jihad in Karnataka: Mohammed Ishaq booked for coercing Hindu woman to convert to Islam

A Bengaluru man, Mohammed Ishaq, has been booked after a Hindu woman from Andhra Pradesh accused him of deceiving her into a relationship and pressuring her to convert to Islam for marriage. The HSR Layout police are investigating the case for cheating, sexual assault, and criminal intimidation, while examining his social media records for links to similar incidents

In yet another shocking incident that has sparked outrage, a young Hindu woman from Andhra Pradesh has accused a Muslim man in Bengaluru of trapping her in a so-called “love and sex scam” and later demanding that she convert to Islam to marry him. The disturbing case, now being widely referred to as “Love Jihad”, has been registered at the HSR Layout Police Station.

The accused, identified as Mohammed Ishaq bin Abdul Rasool, allegedly befriended the woman on Instagram and gradually developed a romantic relationship with her. According to the complaint, Ishaq lured the woman with false promises of marriage and engaged in sexual relations with her on multiple occasions. However, when the victim later asked him to formalise the relationship, he refused — citing religious differences and insisting that she must first convert to Islam.

The victim stated in her police complaint that she first met Ishaq in person on October 30, 2024, near Elements Mall in Thanisandra. After two months, he allegedly took her to a private lodge and had physical relations under the pretext of marriage. Over the months, their relationship continued, and Ishaq maintained emotional control over her through manipulation and threats.

By September 2025, the victim discovered that Ishaq was in close contact with several other women and was even engaged to another Muslim girl. When she confronted him, he allegedly abused and threatened her, saying, “If you come to my house again, you will not return alive.” Terrified and humiliated, the woman then approached the police seeking justice.

In her statement, the victim also revealed that Ishaq’s family pressured her to convert to Islam to marry him. They allegedly told her that she would have to undergo conversion within 40 days and learn to offer Islamic prayers before the marriage could take place. The family reportedly said, “First convert, then we will talk about marriage.”

The emotional trauma drove the young woman to attempt suicide at one point. After learning of this, Ishaq’s relatives allegedly contacted her, urging her not to take legal action, claiming that the matter could be “settled within the family.”

This latest case has reignited public concern over the growing menace of Love Jihad, a term used to describe incidents where women are allegedly lured into relationships by deception and pressured to change their religion. Hindu organisations have condemned the incident, demanding a thorough investigation and stringent punishment for the accused.

Activists have urged the government to strengthen laws to curb such cases, stressing that forced religious conversion under the guise of love is not only a betrayal of trust but also a grave violation of an individual’s right to freedom and safety.

The HSR Layout police have registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS for cheating, sexual assault, and criminal intimidation. Investigations are in progress, and police sources confirmed that the accused’s mobile phone and social media records are being examined to identify whether he was involved in similar cases involving other women.

The case has drawn attention to the alarming pattern of exploitation where unsuspecting young women are trapped through social media platforms and emotionally manipulated in the name of love.

The Bengaluru police have assured strict action, stating that “no one involved in such deceptive and exploitative activities will be spared.”
