The ancient city of Ujjain is preparing for an unprecedented spectacle this Deepawali as artisans and volunteers come together to create a massive 50,000-square-foot rangoli at the Shri Mahakaleshwar mandir, one of India’s twelve revered Jyotirlingas. The elaborate design aims to secure a place in the world record books, turning the temple premises into a vibrant sea of colors and devotion.
The five-day Deepotsav celebrations have begun with great fervor, featuring special aartis, lighting of thousands of diyas, and cultural performances dedicated to Sri Mahakal, the presiding deity of the temple. The event draws inspiration from Ujjain’s deep-rooted spiritual traditions, blending art with worship to create an awe-inspiring devotional experience.
The mandir, dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva in his Mahakala form, is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in India. It houses a Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Lingam that faces south, a rare characteristic among the Jyotirlingas, symbolising Bhagwan Shiva’s power over time and death.
This year’s Deepotsav promises to be a unique fusion of faith and artistic brilliance. The grand rangoli, crafted with organic colors and intricate designs, will depict mythological themes and sacred symbols associated with Sri Mahakal and Deepawali. Devotees and artists from across India have joined hands to participate in this monumental creation.
Temple authorities said the preparation has been ongoing for weeks, with the rangoli designed to reflect Ujjain’s spiritual heritage and its identity as the city of Mahakal. The temple premises are adorned with vibrant lighting, traditional music, and devotional chants, turning the ancient city into a glowing center of divine celebration.
While Ujjain readies itself for a record-setting rangoli, Ayodhya is also preparing for a historic Deepotsav, aiming to light over 2.9 million diyas along the Saryu River ghats, including new areas like Laxman Kila Ghat. The celebrations will include Ram Leela performances, aartis, and cultural shows to mark Bhagwan Ram’s triumphant return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana.
Together, Ujjain and Ayodhya’s grand celebrations mark India’s cultural resurgence of faith, art, and heritage, setting the stage for one of the most visually stunning and spiritually uplifting Deepawalis in recent memory.
