Bihar: NDA allies take lead in declaring candidates for assembly polls

BJP on October 15 declared the names of its all candidate by releasing the second and third list of 12 and 18 candidates respectively

Patna: As the last date for filling of nominations for the first phase of the upcoming Bihar assembly polls, the poll-bound state is buzzing with political activities. Taking a lead in announcing the candidates for the upcoming prestigious assembly polls, NDA allies on October 15 announced their list of candidates.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on October 15 released its second and third list of 12 and 18 candidates respectively for the upcoming polls, taking the total tally of declared candidates to 101 seats which were allotted to the party in the final seat-sharing distribution within the NDA.

According to the second list released by the party, folk singer Maithili Thakur will contest from Alinagar constituency  in Darbhanga district. The announcement comes a day after Thakur joining the BJP in presence of its state unit president.

BJP in the second list has also fielded Anand Mishra from Buxar constituency. Mishra a former IPS has earlier served as Youth Wing President in Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj before joining the BJP.

The party has also announced to field Ranjan Kumar from Muzaffarpur, Choti Kumari from Chhapra and Vinay Kumar Singh from Sonepur. For Baniyapur seat, BJP has announced Kedarnath Singh as party’s candidate. Singh a former Rashtriya Janata Dal [RJD] leader joined the BJP on October 15.

BJP in the third list has announced to field Veena Devi from Kochhadhaman and Ranvijay Singh from Goh assembly constituency. The party has fielded Satish Kumar Yadav from Raghopur who will be locking horns with RJD leader and Bihar LoP Tejashwi Yadav. Significantly, the party had already declared its candidate in the other 71 seats on Tuesday.

Meanwhile other NDA allies including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) also released its first list of 57 candidates fielding party’s state president Umesh Khushwaha from Mahanar constituency. JD[U] has also announced to field Shravan Kumar from Nalanda seat, Kumar is a minister in Bihar cabinet.

Other allies including Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustan Awam Morcha (Secular) and Upendra Kushwaha led Rashtriya Lok Morcha [RLM] also announced their list of candidates.

As of now LJP-R has announced first list of 14 candidates, while HAM has declared candidates on all six assembly constituency allotted to the party. RLM on October 15 announced 4 candidates. As per the seat-sharing arrangements in NDA, both BJP and JD[U] will contest on 101 seats each with LJP-R contesting on 29 assembly seats. HAM[S] and RLM have been both allotted 6 seats each.

Meanwhile the Mahagathbandhan parties, comprising of RJD, Congress, Mukesh Sahni’s Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP) and other left parties, are still reported be engaged in talks to finalise the seat-sharing.

It is being speculated that the Mahagathbandhan parties could announce the name of its candidates after reaching a consensus by Thursday.

Meanwhile, Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor on October 15 announced that he will not contest the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. Other than the NDA and Mahagathbandhan parties, Kishor’s Jan Suraj is contesting  elections on all the 243 seats of the state assembly.

In another development, Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party [RLJP] led by Pashupati Paras on Wednesday announced that the party will join the AIMIM bloc and will fight elections on all the assembly seats. Paras was earlier expected to join the Mahagathbandhan parties. Bihar will go to polls on November 6 and 11, with counting of votes scheduled for November 14.
