While the world is already embroiled in tensions over US President Donald Trump’s tariff war, Europe now appears to be dragging the globe into the next great military conflict. At a time when major developed nations are expected to act with responsibility, their actions and greed seem to be pulling the world back towards an era of confrontation and scarcity.

President Trump has announced sweeping new tariffs, including a 100 per cent duty on medicines imported into the United States, set to take effect on October 1. He clarified that the tariff will not apply to companies that establish manufacturing units within the US and produce medicines domestically. The move will primarily impact branded and patented drugs. In addition, Trump unveiled a 25 per cent tariff on heavy trucks and a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets, bathroom sinks, and vanities, all effective from the same date.

Trump’s latest tariff announcement is poised to jolt the global economy and escalate the trade war to a new level. He stated that the current tariff on medicines is only a “small” one, warning that it will later be raised to 150 per cent and eventually to 250 per cent.

High tariffs have already been imposed on medicines, including essential drugs, following Trump’s decision to launch an investigation into imports of robotics, industrial machinery, and medical devices into the United States. The probe has been framed by Trump administration as a matter of national security. If the findings turn out negative, these categories too will face steep tariffs. The list includes N95 masks, gloves, surgical masks, and other vital medical equipment.

Meanwhile, Russia has issued a stark warning to NATO, raising the spectre of World War III. Moscow’s ambassador to France cautioned that if Russian aircraft were shot down by NATO forces, such an act would be treated as an act of war. His statement came amid growing European accusations that Russia has been violating their airspace through drone incursions and fighter jet movements.

Earlier this month, clear evidence emerged of several Russian drones entering Polish territory. In response, Poland is pushing legislation to allow its military to shoot down Russian drones over Ukraine without requiring approval from NATO or the European Union. On Friday, reports confirmed that three Russian fighter jets violated Estonian airspace, while last Monday, drone activity forced the temporary closure of Copenhagen airport. Russia has been widely accused of orchestrating these incidents.

At the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, President Trump had warned that NATO countries would take decisive action, including shooting down Russian planes that violate their airspace. However, Russia’s ambassador to France, Alexei Meshkov, countered that such a move would be met with war. He further argued that NATO aircraft frequently enter Russian airspace, whether deliberately or unintentionally, but Moscow refrains from taking retaliatory action.

Meshkov also denied Russia’s involvement in the spate of drone attacks across Eastern Europe. Nonetheless, earlier this month, Polish forces shot down three Russian drones during assaults on Ukraine. This marked the first instance of Russian drones being destroyed over NATO territory since the escalation of the war in 2022. Following the incident, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk issued a strong warning to Moscow, stressing that such aggression could spark open conflict between the two nations, the first since World War II. European governments denounced President Vladimir Putin’s strategy as a deliberate provocation.

Soon after, Romania reported that a Russian drone had breached its airspace, adding to regional tensions. Days later, three Russian fighter jets were again accused of violating Estonian skies. These recurring incursions, combined with NATO’s toughened stance, have fuelled mounting concerns of a broader war.

Britain has also stepped up its military posture by deploying a warship in response to increased Russian naval activity near its waters. The confrontation between Russia and NATO continues to escalate, drawing global attention and deepening fears that the fragile balance could tip into direct conflict.
