In the quarterly meeting of the United Nations Security Council, New Delhi has raised serious concerns regarding the spiking movement and activities of the Pakistan-based terrorist groups from Afghanistan soil. India has also urged the international community to consider this matter with utmost urgency and importance in order to ensure that Afghanistan is not being used for terrorist activities.

India also asserted that, it is closely monitoring the developments in Afghanistan and expressed concerns that, Kabul cannot become a fertile ground to brew terrorist activities by those terror outfits who are apparently sanctioned under the UNSC list such as ISIL, Al Qaeda, LeT and JeM. “The international community must coordinate efforts towards ensuring that entities and individuals designated by the UN Security Council, the ISIL and Al Qaeda and their affiliates, including Lashkar E Taiba and Jaisha Muhammad, along with those who facilitate their operations, no longer exploit Afghan territory for terrorist activities”, affirmed Parvathaneni Harish, Indian Envoy to the United Nations.

Peace, stability and progress of Afghanistan is paramount: Indian Envoy

Indian Envoy to UN, Parvathaneni Harish also highlighted that India and Afghanistan share a civilizational relationship. In this direction, peace and stability of the country is of paramount importance to India. In order to foster this goal, India is continuously engaging with regional and global partners. He also said that New Delhi welcomed the Kabul’s strong condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir which was backed by Pakistan.

Harish also spoke about the continuous humanitarian assistance aided by India to Afghanistan since the takeover of the country by the Taliban regime in 2021. Even during the recent earthquake in Afghanistan India was among the first countries to extend humanitarian support.

Indian Envoy at UNSC also advocated for the development and progress of Afghanistan. He spoke regarding the need for the waiver of the UN sanctions on Afghanistan that are detrimental to the growth of the country. He said that India is strongly committed to the developmental needs of the Afghan people and efforts in that direction is non-negotiable. However, in order to realize that goal and to deal with the challenges of the “post-conflict” situation “incentivizing positive behaviour and disincentivizing harmful actions” is essential. “A business as usual approach is not good for Afghanistan and an approach focused only on punitive measures is unlikely to succeed”, Harish further added.

Finally, Harish asserted that under the UN sanctions Afghan people have not seen much scope for enhanced development assistance and cooperation. They are suffering from earthquake, poverty, disease and hunger. To overcome these challenges, India will continue engaging with the relevant stakeholders to realize the goal of a “stable, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan”.
