Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 26 said that the ‘Shoot at Sight’ order would be enforced in the bordering district of Dhubri until the Durga Puja celebration ends. The order was issued during the Eid celebration in June when Islamist threw cattle heads inside a Hindu temple and communal tension flared up in the Dhubri town. CM Sarma said there are no fresh law and order incidents in the district since the imposition of the shoot at sight order. CM Sarma said, “anyone attempting to create violence here will be dealt with strict actions. In Dhubri town, Sanatani people are in majority and our priority is to safeguard them from radical forces.”

He further said, our aim is to not create panic, but to avoid any unwanted situation during the festive period. The order is in place and we don’t want to withdraw it prematurely. So, the order will be in place so that the Durga Puja celebration passes peacefully, he added. He also mentioned that the move is not a political one and his government’s duty is to keep every community safe. Meanwhile, police recovered a huge quantity of ammunition from the nearby South Salmara-Mankachar district last week. Assam police STF are investigating the ammunition recovery case. The Assam police have continuously monitored the situation in Dhubri.

The bordering district to Bangladesh is a Muslim majority district with over 80 percent minority population. Recently, a Jamaat Bangladesh affiliated group sent voice messages to Hindu community members threatening them of dire consequences over the ongoing eviction drives in Assam. Similarly, there were wall writings in Dhubri town in support of Greater Bangladesh which includes Assam, Tripura and Mizoran states. Just for now the situation in Dhubri is under control and the state government is in no mood to lose the security arrangements in the district. Moreover it is believed that several Bangladeshi radical supported Jihadi modules are also active in the district and are waiting for a chance to spread unrest. But the tight security measures by police and intelligence have averted such situations so far.
