Tamil Nadu: CM Stalin dubs 130th Amendment Bill a ‘black bill’, critics call routine DMK tactic to oppose NDA reforms

Critics argue that this kind of opposing strategy is to build a narrative against the Central Government at the grassroots level, who have low access to national news and are mostly censored in regional newspapers and media outlets, which are largely controlled by the DMK ecosystem

Opposing each and every act of the Central Government and following a confrontationist approach towards it is the trait of the Stalin-led Dravidian Model Government. After saying ‘NEP is to impose Hindi on Tamils, kula kalvi (family profession), Vishwakarma scheme, UCC, CAA, abolition of Article 370, arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh for alleged conversion activities, condemning arrest of two journalists in Assam, SIR in Bihar and the recent 130th amendment are a few to list DMK’s stand on some important issues without understanding their significance. Also, CM Stalin has been accusing the Centre of not releasing funds and engaging in a war of words with the Governor, opposing ED and IT raids, not permitting CBI to probe, and attacking constitutional authorities through its allies and platform speakers with cheap language.

Speaking at a book launch function in Chennai, DMK chief and CM MK Stalin on August 21 said, “Union home minister tabled a black bill in Parliament on 19th to dismiss opponents using investigating agencies moving the nation towards authoritarianism. The 130th Constitutional Amendment is not reform. Before this, they brought various laws against the minorities like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and Waqf Amendment Act. Just as we strongly opposed these laws on behalf of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, we will also oppose this black law. Why are they doing all this? They are diverting people from their problems… They are doing it to divert the country from the path of democracy,” Stalin asserted.

Stalin further said, “I say with confidence that we will always stand by the minority people like DMK is, and that DMK is here for you, for this community, especially for the minority community”, assuring that the party founded on the principles of social justice would remain their steadfast ally. black day and this is a black bill.

Opposing this amendment, Stalin said on X, “The 130th Constitutional Amendment is not reform, this is a Black Day and this is a Black Bill. 30-day arrest = Removal of an elected CM. No trial, no conviction, just BJP’s DIKTAT.”

He said, “This is how dictatorships begin: Steal votes, Silence rivals and Crush States. I strongly condemn this Bill, which strikes at the very root of democracy, and I call upon all the democratic forces to unite against this attempt to turn India into a dictatorship. The Union BJP Government has decided to defile the Constitution and its democratic foundations by turning India into a dictatorship under the Prime Minister. After the expose of #VoteTheft, the very mandate on which the Union BJP Government was formed is in serious question. Its legitimacy is doubtful. Having stolen the mandate of the people through fraud, the BJP is now desperate to distract public attention from this exposé. To do that, they have brought in the #130thConstitutionalAmendmentBill.”

He said, “through this laws BJP government at the Centre is trying not just to divert the people of the country from key issues but is also deviating from the Constitution”.

TN CM termed, “The plan of this Bill is clear. It allows the BJP to foist false cases against political opponents in power across States and remove them by misusing provisions that treat even a 30-day arrest as a ground for removal of an elected leader, without any conviction or trial. This unconstitutional amendment will certainly be struck down by the courts because guilt is decided only after trial, not by the mere registration of a case. This is a sinister attempt to intimidate regional parties in the NDA, whose leaders are CMs or Ministers in various States — stick with us or else… The first move of any emerging dictator is to give himself the power to arrest and remove rivals from office. That is exactly what this Bill seeks to do.”

Condemning the issuing notice to journalists linked to The Wire, Stalin said, “I strongly condemn the action of the Assam Police in issuing summons to senior journalists SVaradarajan and KaranThapar of thewire_in. Summons have been issued despite the Supreme Court granting protection in a related matter only days earlier. No copy of the FIR and no particulars of the case have been furnished, leaving only the threat of arrest. Section 152 of the BNS is being misused as a substitute for the repealed sedition law to suppress independent journalism. A democracy cannot survive if asking questions is treated as sedition.”

Critics ask why Stalin is afraid of this Bill. It was brought after how the DMK Government had tried to keep corrupted Senthil Balaji as minister who was on bail despite SC’s stricture and spending taxpayers’ money on highly paid SC advocates. After closely following the cases of Senthil Balaji and former CM Arvind Kejriwal, the Centre has brought a comprehensive bill covering PM, CMs, Union and State ministers under the ambit of the new amendment Bill that has been referred to a parliamentary panel now. If you are clean, one need not worry and face cases. In Tamil Nadu, it was his government that was a dictatorship regime where any criticism against him, his family, his government, leaders of DMK allies and the minority community is met with arrest and filing of false cases. DMK feels it’s a privilege to arrest social media activists and journalists, YouTubers like terrorists during its midnight operations and despatch police teams to other states to apprehend them. TN has been witnessing corruption and scams since 1967 and it is still going on. YouTuber Maridas had branded “Karunanidhi a father of corruption” whose government was indicted in the Sarkaria Commission for various scams. The DMK Government was dismissed for the same reason during the Emergency days by then PM Indira Gandhi.

Moreover, the critics argue that this kind of opposing strategy is to build a narrative against the Central Government at the grassroots level, who have low access to national news and are mostly censored in regional newspapers and media outlets, which are largely controlled by the DMK ecosystem.
