Today marks the fourth death anniversary of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, a towering figure in Indian politics and a key leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). To honour his memory, the BJP is observing the day with large-scale events, including ‘Hindu Shaurya Divas’ in Aligarh on August 21. The event will be held at Talanagari Ground, with several national and state leaders, including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, expected to attend.
Twice Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh
Kalyan Singh served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh twice, becoming the first BJP CM of the state. His first term was from June 24, 1991, to December 6, 1992, and his second from September 21, 1997, to November 12, 1999. In the 1991 elections, the BJP projected him as the face of backwards class empowerment, and he also rose as a firebrand Hindu leader. Known for his wisdom, he often advised people that patience is key to success.
‘Babuji’ – A leader loved by all
Affectionately known as ‘Babuji’, Kalyan Singh was admired for his honesty and simplicity. His favourite dish was washed urad dal, often specially cooked for him during visits to his in-laws’ village, Devapur (Sambhal). Despite his political stature, he remained deeply grounded and approachable, leaving behind warm memories in the hearts of those who knew him.
A decisive leader in the Ram Janmabhoomi Movement
Kalyan Singh is widely remembered for his firm stance during the Babri Masjid demolition. As Chief Minister, he had ordered that no bullets be fired on karsevaks, a decision he took full responsibility for. Following the events of December 6, 1992, he resigned from his post, standing by his actions with conviction.

Born on January 5, 1932, in Madholi village of Atrauli tehsil, Aligarh district, Kalyan Singh began his political journey from humble beginnings. Over the years, he rose to hold key positions not just in Uttar Pradesh, but also at the national level, leaving his mark in Lucknow, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh.

Kalyan Singh passed away on August 21, 2021. He remains a central figure in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and is often remembered as a hero of Hindutva politics. A leader who once spent 20 months in jail, his legacy continues to inspire generations within the BJP and beyond.
