In a powerful example of how technology can aid justice, the Nagpur Rural Police successfully solved a deeply tragic and emotional case that gripped the nation. This case, involving the death of a woman in a hit-and-run incident, marks a significant milestone as it became the first in Maharashtra where AI was used to track down and arrest the accused.

A heartbreaking scene that stirred the nation

The incident came into public attention when a heartbreaking video went viral on social media. It showed a man carrying the body of his deceased wife tied to his bike, trying to take her back to his village after a fatal accident. The footage shocked millions, drawing immediate attention from citizens, activists, and authorities alike.

The man’s wife had been hit by a speeding truck on a highway near Nagpur. The accident occurred so swiftly and violently that the husband, in a state of shock, could neither identify the truck’s license plate nor its make or model. All he could recall was one vague clue, “the truck had a red mark on it.” This small detail, however, became the key to cracking the case.

The challenge for police

With no eyewitnesses, no vehicle registration number, and just a single vague visual cue, the police faced a daunting task. Conventional investigative methods were unlikely to succeed under these conditions. But the Maharashtra government’s foresight in introducing cutting-edge technology, the Nagpur Rural Police had a powerful tool at their disposal: AI surveillance, powered by the MARVEL system.

Enter MARVEL: Maharashtra’s AI-driven policing tool

MARVEL, which stands for Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement, is an advanced AI surveillance and analytics platform introduced in the state by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Designed to strengthen law enforcement capabilities, MARVEL uses artificial intelligence to scan massive volumes of video surveillance data, detect patterns, and help identify suspects in criminal cases.
This AI-powered tool was deployed to scan all CCTV footage collected from highways and public surveillance systems in the vicinity of the accident.

After hours of scanning thousands of video frames and analysing vehicle movement patterns, the MARVEL AI tool successfully identified a truck with a distinctive red marking passing through the accident zone during the estimated time of the incident. Investigators narrowed down the search and began tracing the vehicle’s route through multiple districts and toll booths.

The truck was eventually traced to Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, nearly 700 kilometres away from the site of the accident. The Nagpur police coordinated with their counterparts in Gwalior, and the accused driver was apprehended.

A landmark case

This became the first case in Maharashtra where an accused was tracked and arrested using artificial intelligence. Law enforcement authorities hailed it as a breakthrough moment in modern policing, where technology didn’t just supplement the investigation but became the central force behind solving the case.

Citizens across social media praised the Nagpur Rural Police for their swift action and innovative approach. Many also applauded Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis for supporting technological advancements in governance and policing, ensuring tools like MARVEL are made available for real-world application.

This case has now set a precedent for the use of AI in law enforcement across India. With the increasing deployment of surveillance technology, tools like MARVEL can revolutionise how criminal investigations are conducted, especially in hit-and-run, kidnapping, and terrorism-related cases.
