In yet another glaring example of political shielding, the Kerala Police, under the direct control of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the CPM supremo and Home Minister, appear determined to dilute the Kothamangalam Love Jihad case. Against prime accused Ramiz, only mild charges of abetment of suicide (IPC 306) and sexual abuse with promise to marry have been filed, with the police conveniently erasing any reference to Love Jihad from the report.
Reports suggest that this is due to the intervention of ‘higher-ups’ obviously the CPM leadership and the state government. The deceased, Sona, is reported to have committed suicide when the physical torture and psychological pressure became unbearable. These are the statements of the victim’s mother and her brother, Basil. However, the police did not take their accounts into consideration.

Instead, the FIR included the statement of a distant relative, Eldos Wilson, who reportedly lives far away. He claimed that Sona committed suicide due to frustration. Wilson’s statement and the police action appears mysterious. There are also reports that the police instructed Sona’s family members not to disclose details of her death or the contents of her suicide note to the public. The family spoke about the suicide note only after her cremation on August 10.
When the death and suicide note became the talk of the state, police officers arrived at the deceased’s house to take statements. Sona’s mother initially believed that Ramiz’s arrest had been delayed due to the absence of a formal complaint from her. She then told the police that she was ready to lodge a complaint but they refused to accept it. Only then did Sona’s mother and brother reveal the contents of the suicide note to the public.
Sona’s mother is now demanding an NIA enquiry into her daughter’s death. The reason is simple: she does not trust the Kerala Police. She has lodged a complaint with CM Pinarayi Vijayan and the Kerala State Police Chief, stating that her daughter’s suicide was the result of an attempt at forced religious conversion to Islam, and that she suspects the role of religious extremism in the incident.
Meanwhile, the family members of the accused Ramiz have disappeared from their home.
Basil said that the sole demand of Ramiz and his family was Sona’s conversion to Islam. Ramiz, his friends and family members allegedly locked Sona in a room and tortured her in an inhuman manner.
BJP state vice-president Adv. Shone George has alleged that the CPM-led ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the police are trying to divert public attention from the Love Jihad angle. He has demanded the immediate custody of Ramiz’s parents, accusing them of also pressuring Sona to convert. He has called for the application of anti-conversion laws, and for charges of religious extremism and terrorism to be filed.

The Catholic Congress and the powerful Syro Malabar Church have also demanded an NIA enquiry into the case. Fr. James Kokkavayil, Secretary of the Syro Malabar Church’s Public Affairs Committee, said that Ramiz hails from Panayikkulam in Ernakulam district, a place infamous for Islamic terrorism and that Sona was held there in forced confinement. He insisted that the charge-sheet should include the offence of forced conversion and that only central intervention can bring the full truth to light. The Church has resolved to continue its agitations on the issue.
Panayikkulam hit national headlines a couple of decades ago due to the SIMI terror camp conducted there.

Union Minister George Kurien has visited Sona’s family at their home and offered his condolences. He has said that the state government should take the initiative for an NIA enquiry and that judicial intervention is necessary in Love Jihad cases.
Kerala has witnessed numerous chilling cases of Love Jihad, where innocent young non-Muslim girls were lured in the name of love, only to be trafficked to Islamic countries and handed over to jihadi fighters. Many such cases were investigated by the NIA, and the harrowing reality inspired films like The Kashmir Files, based on true events and the fate of girls still trapped—or those who narrowly escaped. This menace is not confined to Kerala; across India, there is a systematic conspiracy by radical Muslim networks to ensnare Hindu and Christian girls with the sole aim of forced conversion to Islam. The recent arrest of ‘Chungur Baba’ in Uttar Pradesh exposed a massive organised gang engaged in this very mission, with clear links to extremist outfits like the PFI and Jamaat-e-Islami.
Even former Kerala Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan admitted there is a long-term plan to turn Kerala into a Muslim-majority state. Yet, despite such warnings and mounting evidence, the state’s ruling Left government continues to look the other way—or worse, dilute cases to shield the accused—while the machinery of Love Jihad grinds on, threatening the security, faith, and future of India’s daughters.
