Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 10, inaugurated the Yellow Line of the Bengaluru Metro, linking the city’s central district to its IT hub, Electronics City. The 19.15-kilometre stretch, which covers 16 stations, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and benefit nearly 18 lakh commuters in South Bengaluru.
Arriving at the R.V. Road (Ragigudda) Metro Station, PM Modi purchased a ticket by scanning a QR code before boarding the inaugural train. Braving the rain, thousands gathered outside the station to greet him, showering flowers and raising slogans in his favour. The Prime Minister acknowledged the crowd with a wave before heading to the platform.
Journey with Students and Workers
In a symbolic gesture, PM Modi travelled on the first Yellow Line service alongside 16 girl students from a government school and eight labourers who helped build the Metro line. The journey began at R.V. Road and ended at Bommanahalli Metro Station.
From Bommanahalli, he proceeded to the IIIT Auditorium in Electronics City, where he laid the foundation stone for Bengaluru Metro Phase 3 and formally inaugurated the Yellow Line services once again.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The event saw the presence of Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Ministers Manohar Lal and Shobha Karandlaje, Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, Bengaluru Rural BJP MP C.N. Manjunath, and former CM H.D. Kumaraswamy. Officials from the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) briefed the Prime Minister about the project’s development.
Tejasvi Surya: ‘A Milestone for Bengaluru’
BJP Yuva Morcha President and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya hailed the inauguration as a milestone for the city’s public transport network.
“Phase 3 of the Metro, once operational, will enable around 10 lakh people to commute daily. The Yellow Line Metro will benefit 18 lakh people in the Bengaluru South region,” he said.
Surya revealed that he had personally requested PM Modi to inaugurate the project, to which the Prime Minister responded by ensuring the ceremony took place without delay.
“He insisted there should be no further delay, as the services would ease traffic congestion. The inauguration date was fixed within just seven to eight days,” Surya added.
